On Doing Better Than 50%, Or, Could More "Made In USA" Mean More Jobs?

by: fake consultant

Mon Aug 15, 2011 at 18:53:41 PM MST

We gotta grow some jobs, and that's a fact, and we probably aren't going to be able to do it with big ol' jobs programs funded by the Federal Government, what with today's politics and all, and that means if this Administration wants to stay in the jobs game they're going to have to find some smaller and more creative ways to do it.

They are also going to have to come up with ideas that are pretty much "bulletproof", meaning that they are so hard to object to that even Allen West and Louie Gohmert will not want to be on record saying "no no no!"; alternatively, solutions that work around the legislative process entirely could represent the other form of "bulletproof-ery".

Well, I have one of those "maybe bulletproof" ideas for you today, and it has to do with how "Made in USA" the things are that our Government buys.

IKEA Workers vote to join Union

by: Zappatero

Wed Jul 27, 2011 at 17:51:03 PM MST

( - promoted by Fong)

IKEA workers have voted to join a union, says Laura at DKos:
Ikea is, not unlike T-Mobile and its German parent company, one of these companies that have good labor practices in Europe and then come to the United States for cheap, union-free labor.

But today, workers at Ikea's Swedwood plant in Danville, Virginia, voted to join a union. The vote was 221-69, despite a typical anti-union campaign:

Rather than remaining neutral and supporting a "Fair and Friendly" election as IKEA management had discussed with BWI and the IAMAW, the United States-based Swedwood management continued to follow the advise of its union avoidance law firm and conducted several activities designed to alter the outcome of the election. Regardless of these intrusive tactics that ranged from "voluntary" meetings with Swedwood management; rumours of plant closure; and promises of bonuses should the union be defeated, the workers decided to join the union. Issues of safety and health, racial discrimination, dignity and basic human respect were the main grievances that the workers had expressed as reasons for voting to join the Machinists Union.
That's a decisive vote. Will IKEA fight it? Will the workers hold fast? Maybe workers have seen that unions aren't all bad and a pro-union, pro-Middle Class craze will sweep into Colorado to IKEA's Littleton store?

Let's frickin' hope so.

And for all the anti-labor, anti-union, pro-corporate whiners who will decry this - you know who you are - let them take the side of this highly profitable foreign corporation over the local Colorado workers who sweat within its walls. I hope they whine about it every day.....

Denver City Council Special Election - Vote Susan Shepherd

by: Sustainer

Wed Apr 28, 2010 at 12:01:39 PM MST

In the April 25th Post Susan Barnes-Gelt's Op/Ed describes the demographic changes that have happened in northwest Denver in the last decade or so as including an influx of, "...younger, diverse and more progressive urbanites."

Unfortunately, just this weekend, City council candidate and term limited State Senator Paula Sandoval's campaign actually mailed a letter addressed to "fellow Republicans" in which she is warmly endorsed by former Republican state legislators including Chuck Berry.

Berry is the President of the ultra right wing business group called Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry, or CACI.  He opposed health care reform, opposed closing corporate tax loopholes to prevent further cuts to education and services, and supports the anti-working family legislation known as "right-to-work."

Much can be known about us by the company we keep.

Would you rather see a fresh and progressive city, or "...the last gasp of calcifying North Denver politics..." represented by Sandoval?

Susan Shepherd is truly the breath of fresh air North Denver needs.  She'll see to it that Denver's future is smart AND sustainable. I hope you'll check her out at [www.shepherdfornorthwestdenver.com www.shepherdfornorthwestdenver.com]

Thank You, Nancy Spence

by: Fong

Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 14:33:15 PM MST

And by "thank" I mean "f**k".

Senator Nancy Spence (R-Centennial) is playing politics with the education of young children. This time it comes in the form of accusing teachers of blocking a federal grant that would band-aid the hemorrhaging education money her comrades only opportunistically care about.

In the Denver Daily News, Spence says "K-12 must not be as underfunded as the teachers union claims if they are going to this much trouble to block a bill and a grant application that would wholly benefit Colorado schools," said Spence.

She's saying teachers should give up their due process for $25 per pupil, per year.
