Edgar Johansson is a Socialist

by: hulanoob

As a lifelong (23 years) resident of Jefferson County, I am disappointed in who our county GOP has given blessing to run in HD23. I know this blog knows Edgar Johansson is a carpet bagger who moved to the district only days before the deadline to file for candidacy but now he's having a fundraiser hosted by Wayne Allard who was one of the most extreme Senators Colorado ever had. In step with the rest of the national GOPs unbridled duplicity, here are the reasons cited in the fundraiser invite to support Edgar Johnasson.

Here are some other great reasons to support Edgar:

- Having a true friend of the Aerospace industry in the State Legislature will bring much needed understanding and appreciation of just what we do for the economy of this state.

- Even though as an industry, we play mainly at the Federal level, the Colorado laws, regulations and taxation policies can have a real impact on our bottom line. With Edgar's knowledge, we can get a "head-ups" if anything is proposed that will affect our industry.

The message here is that if elected, carpetbagger and "true friend" of this so-called private industry-Johansson will not only use his position to force taxpayers to subsidize this industry, just like what happened in New Mexico, but he will also use his position to alert his cronies about anything the state may be doing that would effect their "bottom line". If that doesn't make you angry, I'll break it down a little more for you.

First, according to CNBC, Colorado is ranked as the third most friendly state for business beat only by Texas and Virginia. For many of the last several years, Colorado has seen about half a billion dollar budget cuts just from education. Business is doing as well as it can in Colorado. Any more "incentives" for business, which are really taxpayer subsidies, and we won't have a civilized society in this state. But that doesn't matter to the ultra-rich for which the aerospace industry is their patent playground. They have their wealth and their stated goal is their bottom line so they'll use their wealth to more purely concentrate their wealth, especially if that means buying a seat on the legislature by moving a Downtown Denver resident to the district at the last minute. <---- It's the American dream, right?

Wrong!

The principles on which this country is founded are fundamentally democratic. A crony of a special interest that is not in the greater interest of the people is an enemy of our state. Johansson very unethically moved to our district to try to seize a spot on the legislature where his rich buddies could use our money to pad their "bottom line".

And do you know that that is? It's socialism!

Is It Time For Class Warfare?

by: Bill Egnor AKA Something The Dog Said

Those who read my posts (and there are a lot more of you than I ever thought there would be) know that I am not really a fan of divisive politics. This comes from the teachings of my Mom, who spent her political career reaching out to Republicans to get things done in Washtenaw County. Her argument was always that while you might hammer your opponents in today's fight, you're probably going to need them to get tomorrows work done. It is generally good advice, but it is predicated on the premise that your opponents want to get things done and really are working for the best solution for everyone.

Sadly Mom's good advice can not be used right now. There has been too big a shift in power in the nation for us to look at the Republicans as any kind of honest partner in anything. The efforts of the folks like the ultra-wealthy Koch brothers have shifted our discourse so far to the right that things which would have had politicians thinking about spending more time with their families in the past can be said with a straight face and taken as serious.

Let The Bush Tax Cuts Expire, The Ultra-Wealthy Should Pay More

by: Bill Egnor AKA Something The Dog Said

Republicans have a real problem. Well, they have a lot of them but we are not talking about moral, genetic or hygienic problems, we're talking about a political problem. They pulled a fast one with their double round of tax cuts in 2001 and 2003. At the time we were told (against all evidence, and common sense) that if we cut the tax rate for the ultra-wealthy, if we allowed them to pass on their enormous wealth to their heirs without taxing it that there would be a robust economy, that millions and millions of jobs would be created. It was the old trickle down economy idea, dressed up for the big time.

The thing was even their own numbers showed that any positive effect would be wiped out in 10 years and then it would become a major problem in terms of budgets. So rather than face the music and the voters with this news, the Republicans put a sunset provision in the bill. It would only last 10 years, then revert to the same level of tax that the Clinton economic expansion had. This all looked pretty sweet to Republicans. They would be able to move the burden of paying for government to from wealth to work, and would have a whole decade to get these cuts made permanent.

Friday funny: Tax cuts solve all problems

It must be nice being a Republican these days. Everything is so simple when you believe that tax cuts are the answer to every problem. I was going to write something about this on my blog, spoonfighter.com, when I realized that it would be funnier as a movie. So, here you go:

Unpacking Republican Lies In Colorado

by: Bill Egnor AKA Something The Dog Said

Tue May 25, 2010 at 06:50:12 AM MST

They say all politics is local (well Tip O'Neil said that) so I thought I would take this post to talk about the governors race here is the great state of Colorado. For those of you who don't live in the Centennial State we have a mildly interesting state of affairs. Our Democratic Governor decided this winter that he would not run for a second term. Colorado has term limits so this would have been his final term in any case but the polling did not look good for Gov. Ritter so he decided that he would not contest the election.

In one way this is good thing. He had made several decisions that had alienated him from his base; failing to side with unionized grocery workers; the nearly inexplicable appointment of political novice Michael Bennet to the United States Senate; these kinds of things were going to make for tough sledding in a state where you must carry your base if you have a prayer of living in the Governors Mansion.

VETO Arizona's SB 1070

by: Fong

Thu Apr 22, 2010 at 00:10:08 AM MST

Arizona's SB 1070 is some of the worst, most racist and counter-productive legislation in recent memory and people are speaking out against it and getting arrested for it. I want to show you some footage of that arrest, what an Arizona business and immigration attorney has to say about how this subsidizes racist lawsuits, and the list of only a few of the egregious points from the bill.

I would also like to note the acronym GIITEM for Gang and Immigration Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission.

From the fact sheet:

1. Requires a reasonable attempt to be made to determine the immigration status of a person during any legitimate contact made by an official or agency of the state or a county, city, town or political subdivision (political subdivision) if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the U.S...

5.Allows a law enforcement officer, without a warrant, to arrest a person if the officer has probable cause to believe that the person has committed any public offense that makes the person removable from the U.S...

7.Disallows officials or agencies of the state or political subdivisions from adopting or implementing policies that limit immigration enforcement to less than the full extent permitted by federal law, and allows a person to bring an action in superior court to challenge an official or agency that does so...

8. Requires the court, if there is a judicial finding that an entity has committed a violation, to order any of the following:

  a)that the plaintiff recover court costs and attorney fees;

b)that the defendant pay a civil penalty of not less than $1,000 and not more than $5,000 for each day that the policy has remained in effect after the filing of the action.

9. Requires the court to collect and remit the civil penalty to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), which must establish a special subaccount for the monies in the account established for the Gang and Immigration Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission GIITEM appropriation.

14.Directs the person to pay jail costs and an additional assessment of at least $500 for the first violation or at least $1,000 for subsequent offenses...

18.Specifies that it is unlawful, if a motor vehicle is stopped on a street, roadway or highway and blocks or impedes the normal movement of traffic:

  a)for a motor vehicle occupant to attempt to hire or hire and pick up passengers for work at a different location;

b)for a person to enter the motor vehicle in order to be hired by a motor vehicle occupant and to be transported to work at a different location...

29.  States that it is not entrapment for law enforcement officers or their agents merely to use a ruse or to conceal their identities

30.  Directs employers to keep verification records of their employees' work eligibility through E-Verify.

31.Establishes a class 3 felony for failing to:

a)verify employment eligibility through E-Verify or

  b)keep records of verifications...

Tax the rich until their freakin eyes bleed

I just moved to beautiful Colorado from New York, and I am glad to join you all here at SquareState. Though I tend to write more on National politics I look forward to learning more about Colorado and helping make this swing state blue! Cheers to all

This is why it was so important to put profit over safety, which resulted in the deaths of 29 miners at a Massey coal mine and hundreds and hundreds of safety code violations before that.

Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship was paid $17.8 million last year, "a $6.8 million raise over 2008 and almost double his compensation package in 2007. Blankenship also has a deferred compensation package valued at $27.2 million at the end of last year."

The graph below proves that "Trickle Down" supply side economics ala President Reagan is pure bullsh*t. When the rich get richer everyone else gets poorer, and since the super rich are now richer than ever we should tax the hell out of them.

Hickenlooper Continues Business-Worship Trend

by: WeatherDem

Fri Mar 19, 2010 at 09:23:15 AM MST

John Hickenlooper, Denver's current mayor and candidate for Colorado's 2010 Governor race, is continuing his bid to show Coloradans who can worship the most at the feet of the business community: himself or Con candidate Scott McInnis.  Coloradans are looking for a choice, Mayor.  If you try to paint yourself as Republican-lite, Coloradans will choose the true Republican.

What has raised my ire today?  Another Denver Post article detailing the mayor's words at a Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday.  According to the mayor, Colorado is now known as an anti-business state, Ritter sided with "overboard" environmentalists and raising taxes in a recession is "crazy".

At this point, Hick is going to have to work very, very hard to secure my vote this November.  I don't want a person with a "D" after their name in the Governor's mansion governing like he wants to be a Con.
