Not everything a blogger posts can be political all the time. This is why I am going to take this opportunity to talk about the person that more than any other has made me the man I am. Today is the 15th anniversary of my marriage to my wife Liz.
We met 20 years ago when she was working as a waitress at Hooters (yeah, she just loves it when I tell this story). For me it was love at first sight. And I mean that quite sincerely. There was something about her, and it was not the tight bright orange shorts.
As these things often go, she thought I was a loud mouth jerk and way, way, way too full of myself. Not being one to take "get lost you poser" lying down I set out to win her. It took a while but eventually I managed to scrape together enough integrity and humility that she saw I was not all jerk and there might be some redeeming qualities and agreed to a date.
It has been a long time since that first date, but we have pretty much been madly in love that whole time.

It has been 368 days since my company of 10 years laid me off. I could be bitter about it, I suppose, but having had access to the financials, I knew how bad things were and knew that on that day I was just one of 30% of the workforce who would be told they no longer had a job. I was annoyed that I was on the block, having two projects in the previous 12 months that were returning 1.8 million and 2.2 million to the bottom line, but none of that matters when they ask for your keys, credit card and ID badge.
I went out the door with a plan. By the time I had packed up my office I knew I needed to go by a new suit, a new computer and call everyone in my card file. I had a nice little severance package worth two months of my salary and I was going to be employed before that ran out. It was the old company's loss, not mine. I contacted recruiters, signed up on every job board available, and worked my network like a mad man.

Welcome to part three of this series. I am writing about the process of bankruptcy from the inside for a couple of reasons. First, it is so mind numbing and overwhelming that I have to do something. Since I write, well, that is what I do to get things straight in my own head. The second reason is the more important one, the hope that having some record of this experience out there will help someone, anyone, who has to go through this process in the future. If you are interested in how Liz and I got here and what going and talking to the lawyers is like you can find those installments at the links below:
