We are again having to take a short bypass on our planned writing journey; this time to a place that's, according to their Facebook page, about 148 beer stores north of Toronto, Ontario (which, for the benefit of the less-geographically aware reader, is in Canada).
It's a crazy place, where duct tape is more truly the coin of the realm than loonies, but we're going to try to explain it all today...and in the effort we may even learn about a few things that really matter, like the unimportance of importance, and the kind of quality of life that comes from having a junk pile and a sense of adventure.
So grab the bug spray, Gentle Reader, because it's time to visit Possum Lodge.

What do you do when it becomes clear you're going to lose on a political issue? Depending on the issue you might get depressed, you might feel cynical about the whole situation, you might get really angry. Or if you are a conservative group like the Family Research Council or American Family Association, you might lose you freaking mind and start saying and supporting things that can only be described as bat-guano insane.
As the compromise on Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal has taken form the uber conservative and falsely named Family Research Council has pulled out all the stops. Yesterday they rolled out a so-called study claiming that an end to DADT will mean a free-rape zone in the military. Talking Points Memo reports:
Here's how the Family Research Council envisions things going if Don't Ask, Don't Tell is repealed: first, more straight soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines will be fellated in their sleep against their will. Then, commanders afraid of being labeled homophobes will refuse to do anything about it. Eventually, the straight service members will quit out of fear.
On a conference call with reporters today, FRC Senior Fellow for Policy Studies Peter Sprigg delivered the results of what he said was the first-ever study of "homosexual assault" in the military. Joined by several former military officers opposed to allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the armed forces, he warned Congress that the DADT repeal language currently under discussion with the agreement of the White House will turn the U.S. military into a terrifying free-rape zone where no heterosexual is safe.

THE Question - Is America a Democracy or an Oligarchy?
Sen. Sanders: "Right now, what ends up happening, is Big Money interests, whether in fact it is in oil and energy, whether it's in prescription drugs . . ."
Dylan Ratigan: "BP"
Sen. Sanders: "Whether it is in banking, these guys have huge amounts of money, and the situation gets worse with the recent Citizens United Supreme Court decision, and anyone who stands up to the big money interests can expect a huge amount of 30 second ads against them. That's the reality. Are we a Democracy, or are we an Oligarchy where the very powerful special interests exert enormous influence over our Government?"
Ratigan: "What's your answer to that question?"
Sen. Sanders: "I think we're an Oligarchy and I think it's getting worse."
Much more, plus video and transcript below the fold.

I often try to understand the people who make up the political opposition to my point of view. After all by understanding what motivates them, there is a chance to turn their assumptions against them, or in increasingly rare cases these days, persuade them to my point of view. Which makes folks like Donna Milo even more of a cipher.
Ms. Milo is a Republican who is running to unseat Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz this cycle. What makes Ms. Milo different is that she is a transgender woman. I am really pleased the any transgendered person is running for office. Here in my hometown a transgendered woman has been running for Councilor at Large for our City Council for a couple of cycles. Pam Bennett came in 4th in her bid to be a Council member.
