Will the Birthers Ever Stop?

You'd think KHOW's Peter Boyles, who's probably the leading birther talk-show host in America, would at least stop and say 'thank you' when a State Senator tips his hat to Boyles' relentless efforts to expose President Obama's Social Security number as blonging to another man.

Boyles had his chance Tuesday, when State Sen. Greg Brophy told Boyles on air that media corporations "shut down" the debate about Obama's Social Security number because such a debate might be "toooo disruptive" and because the media companies to make less money.

Boyles @17:10: I don't know if you've seen this, Come and Take It. It's a wonderful video by this guy coming up Steve Vaus. He's won some Grammy's and he's done this video. They can't get anybody to let him buy time, including the company I work for, won't let him buy time. So we put him up. We put him on the air... It's interesting, as he's pointed out, the big media corps, they are as afraid of the President, or in bed with these guys because they are looking for bailouts, so they don't want any problems. But the same stations that would not take Vaus' ad will take ads from the people with Gabby Giffords. Does that make any sense to you as an elected official?
Brophy: Of course it doesn't. But I guess, on the one hand, they just want what's good for business. They're not ideological. That's why they shut down all that talk about, that you worked so hard on, the President's Social Security number. Exact same thing. Let's not talk about the stuff that might be toooo disruptive because, 'we all got to make some money here.'

If I'm Boyles, and I hear this from Brophy, I'm thinking, "Ah ha! I've got a fellow birther on the phone. And he's a State Senator! I should ask some questions and test the depth of his birtherness."

But Boyles, who ranks as Colorado's number one birther, according to Denver Post Editorial Page Editor Curtis Hubbard, let it slide by, without asking Brophy if he thinks the origin of Obama's SS number is a legitimate issue that truly deserves more media scrutiny.

So I did Boyles' work for him and asked the amiable Brophy whether he thought Obama's Social Security number is fake.

"Call Boyles and ask him," he responded. "He did extensive work on it."
Questioned further, Brophy wrote: "Peter makes a great case, and I have not heard a rebuttal. Do you have a good one."

I referred Brophy to Snopes and media fact checkers.

Post's style guide on usage of the phrase "illegal immigrant" raises questions

As an addendum to a shrill column by Ruben Navarette arguing that the term "illegal immigrant" should not be replaced by a phrase like "undocumented worker," The Denver Post Perspective section published its own guidelines on how Post journalists should use the terms.

Unfortunately, the explanation apparantly only appeared in the print edition.

I was going to ask The Post to put it online, and I'm thinking its omission was just an oversight, but before I did, I thought I'd put it out there for people to see:

Newspaper usage
The Denver Post: The Post uses the term "illegal immigrants" in referring to citizens of foreign countries who are in this country with no passport, visa or other document to show that they are entitled to visit, work or live in the United States. We do not use "illegal aliens" or "illegals" except in direct quotes or in rare cases when the official government term "illegal aliens" is unavoidable. We will not use the nouns "alien" and "illegal" in headlines. The term "undocumented immigrants" or "undocumented workers" is an acceptable synonym but is more vague.
The Associated Press: The AP also prefers the term "illegal immigrant." Unless quoting someone, the news service does not use the terms "illegal alien," "an illegal," "illegals" or the term "undocumented."

My question for The Post is, what constitutes sufficient proof that an individual doesn't have a "passport, visa or other document to show that they are entitled to visit, work or live in the United States."

If someone admits not having proper documentation? If immigration officials or police make this determination? If someone can't produce documentation immediately? What's the evidentiary standard?

It's one thing to label the group of people who are presumably in the United States illegally as "illegal immigrants," but it's another to presume any single individual is an "illegal immigrant."

Last year, Post City Editor Dana Coffield told me that The Post only refers to someone's immigration status "when it becomes part of and material to the public record"--unlike talk-radio host Peter Boyles who dehumanizes himself and all of us by implying or asserting that someone with a Spanish surname is an "illegal."

Anyway, I'll ask The Post my question about its style guide next week, and I'll include a few of the best questions from my readers, if you have any. Shoot them my way, if you do to tips@bigmedia.org.

President Barack Obama ran - and Won Again - as a Progressive

The anti-tax radical Grover Norquist, and all those fooled by various far-right-wing radio snake-oil salesmen (thank you Peter Boyles and Mike Rosen!), will disagree, but dollars to donuts you can't find an objective, sane analyst that denies the President, and Democrats across the nation, won as Progressive candidates running on Progressive values:

If there is a single plank in the Democratic platform on which Obama can claim to have won, it is taxing the rich.
Obama ignored vast swaths of his agenda, barely mentioning climate change or education reform, but by God did he hammer home the fact that his winning would bring higher taxes on the rich. He raised it so relentlessly that at times it seemed out of proportion even to me, and I wrote a book on the topic. But polls consistently showed the public was on his side.
Obama's goal was to prove to the GOP that their rigid defense of the richest one percent was political poison and to force them to bend. For now, at least, their same monomaniacal refusal to increase any taxes on the rich is leading Republicans to deny any connection between the tax issue and Obama's victory. ...
The harsh truth that fend-for-yourself economic libertarianism is a worldview mainly confined to the shrinking, aging white electorate is a reality Republicans prefer not to acknowledge.

Of course, what the people want is all fairly beside the point now. What matters in Washington is power and leverage-two things that accrued dramatically in Obama's favor last week.
But it's not irrelevant that American voters had a chance to lay down their marker on the major social divide of our time: whether government can mitigate the skyrocketing inequality generated by the marketplace....
Here it was, right before our eyes: a class war, or the closest thing one might find to one in modern American history, as a presidential election. The outcome was plain.
The 47 percent turned out to be the 51 percent.

We won one battle in a class war that his been waged by Republicans, won by Millionaires and Billionaires for years.

Time to boldly take that victory bull by the horns as Republicans have never been hesitant to do.

Obama-hating Boyles hits talk-radio pay dirt by saying Romney & Coffman will lose

Should anyone care that KHOW talk-radio host Peter Boyles is saying Romney and Coffman will lose big time?

I think it matters, to a small degree, because one thing you can say about Boyles, he knows his audience, and he realizes they also think Romney and Coffman are losers. Otherwise, Boyles might have held back.

"I've been watching Mitt Romney, and they jammed him up on that 47 percent thing...now he's trying to 'soften' his approach to the '47 percent,'" Boyles said on air Thursday. "Now Romney is counter-programming. In other words, once somebody takes the lead, and it's true in radio when somebody tries to counter-program another program, they've already lost, if they're counter-programming. And now Romney is counter-programming Obama. At that point, he's lost. I really believe it...
Does anyone in this audience really think Romney is going to win this election?
...Coffman is going to get clipped too.
...I say Republicans are going to get clubbed in Colorado as well as nationally... If you can you defend the Republican Party, please call the show."

Boyles knows his conservative/independent/checked-out audience agrees with him, even the ones who don't want to acknowledge it, like this caller:

Brett: Hey, I just wanted to call and be straight up honest with you. I definitely have a problem with you calling this election when it's not even over. It's 40 days, and there's so much that can happen in 40 days, and, like you said earlier, talk radio is dominated by conservatives.
Boyles: I take it back. Talk radio is dominated by Republicans.
Brett: OK, even if that's true, then the majority of the listening audience would be Republicans.
Boyles: Do you want me say what I don't believe, or do you want me to say what I believe?
Brett: The problem is, when you say that, even for the few people, and I know it's not your job to care about those people [who may be discouraged from voting].... We can't take four more years of Obama.

Callers were getting mad at Boyles, but you could tell they respected him for it, for saying what they see as the sad truth about the President, whom Boyles has been bashing for years.

Boyles: "It's the truth, and if the truth hurts, so be it," says Boyles. "Most of the time I hope I'm wrong in the things I believe. I think we're an empire sliding off into the sea. I believe we're headed toward such incredible economic chaos in this country...The western world is broke. Brett, it's over."

So Boyles gets to be the truth teller, earn some respect from people who don't want to hear it but agree with him. Brett even admitted Obama will win.

And Boyles gets a couple really good hours of talk radio out of it. Truly, it made great radio.

That's how Boyles has survived for so long in Denver, and it's another small sign that Romney is heading south.

Now if he can get Mitt to ask for the President's Occidental College transcripts we'd be able to find out if Barack was a Mosslomen Foreigner, or was anything less than a Straight-A student.

"Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It's one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump (Birther), Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Birther), and Kris Kobach (I don't know who this Asshole is, in any case we've got Boyles.)
But Governor Romney's decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across merica."

Hey, at least Romney enlisted in something. Neither he nor his 5 Strapping Sons ever saw fit to enlisted in our armed forces. And Mike Coffman, our wonderful, patriotic, veteran congressman, might, or might not, approve....I don't know. Someone should ask him:

Mike Rosen's irrational hatred of our Democratically-elected, African-American President

Poor Mike Rosen just can't help himself. And he can't help but inflame his high-motivation, low-information voter/listeners. Rosen says today that Mike Coffman was correct in his slander and lies about Barack Obama. Since these guys are going after so many aspects of Obama's presidency, and COPols has proven Rosen is by definition a "birther", let's just look at another Obama criticism: the hyperbolic and completely irrational charge that Barack Obama (and all his constituents and supporters - that's you and me, folks) are European Socialists with a hidden Hatred of America.

Of course, no amount of evidence, no rational discussions, no comparisons of policies across the world will convince Rosen and his listeners otherwise. Nothing will stop the irrational hatred of a man who is implementing many fairly conservative (note: dictionary definition) policies, many of which were supported by Republicans in their own form or as policies before Obama also endorsed them.

Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Don't confuse this definition with the definition of "government" or "society" in general. If we have no rules, no common reference for acceptable behavior, we have anarchy -- which no one here advocates.

No socialism there. No socialism anywhere that Rosen can find or prove.
No one is trying to take away anyone's wealth. No one is proposing we tax the Forbes 400 List into poverty (though many among Rosen's listeners will make the accusation). Certainly no one with any power has proposed we take over the thieving banks or polluting energy companies or monopolistic media companies.

But none of these facts will change anything in this debate. Nothing. Never. No-how....will change the mind of Mike Rosen or anyone who claims Obama is Socialist.

And for our Democratic elected leaders please note: these are the people with whom you are negotiating to implement effective policies and with whom you eternally desire to be bipartisan.

Go vote if you haven't already! Like Peter Boyles - the Pope of Colorado Birthers says, these people will not stop peddling this stuff just cuz one was too embarrassed to stick to his charge:

Mr. Coffman's views were an example of that very (Pat Buchanan-type) racism. America should be outraged at this, but we laugh it off as minor.
Mr. Coffman is not a nut, he is far more dangerous than that: He's an intelligent bigot with political power and reach who should be feared and respected.
Remember the audience, educated and well heeled, clapped at his remarks. Democrats and progressives need to wake up and realize what the Republicans have been dong since the Tea Party took over (actually, much earlier than that - Z) and what their goal is: The annihilation of Progressives and Democrats regardless of their gender, color, faith, sexuality, union affiliation or any cultural modifier.

I met the guy personally and will attest to his arrogance. Curtis Hubbard reiterates the same at the Post with a minor scold to Dog-Whistling Congressman Mike Coffman:

The Aurora Republican, who has served in the Army and the Marines, marched into Elbert County Saturday (which isn't even in his new district), opened his mouth to discuss defense spending, and promptly stuck a combat boot in it:
"I don't know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don't know that. But I do know this, that in his heart, he's not an American. He's just not an American."

When a supporter posted it online, it wasn't long before the comments became news in the ~~Denver-metro area~~ online, political fundraising, and cable news worlds.
How many of you would advise Mike Coffman that the best way to introduce himself in a new, more competitive district is via stories on the top-rated TV station and in the state's largest newspaper in which he essentially puts on the tri-cornered hat and shows the world his "birther" card?
And then offering an apology that contains more arrogance than remorse?

The only ones that would recommend this are Peter Boyles at KHOW, Lou Pate at 850KOA, Glenn Beck at KHOW, Bill Cunningham at 850KOA, and a slew of other big-and-small-time media conservatives who repeat this crap every single day.

Thanks for the easy question, Curtis. Coffman's arrogance came through quite clearly once again. And Republicans' reliance on smear and innuendo vs. policies and solutions should tell you one other thing that is also quite clear: both sides don't do it.

Republican Mike Coffman goes Birther

These people are truly cowards. They live in their own world constructed by Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, local Birthers on steroids like Peter Boyles and the hideous racist, radio reject named Lou Pate (currently on 850KOA weekend duty).

As through all of this the Birthers, the Republican Congressmen and Senators, and the major media figures that continually repeat the lies are enabled by a Democratic establishment that thinks it will go away by magic.

Then when their representatives get in public and are confronted with reality, they slink back into the pretend world where a President, voted into office by a large margin of American Citizens, who is successfully performing his official duties, is some furrin', alien, Muslim Socialist who hate America.

That's the implication of Republican Mike Coffman's Idiotic Statement on May 12:

"I don't know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don't know that. But I do know this, that in his heart, he's not an American. He's just not an American."

Actually, the continuing irresponsibility by those like Peter Boyles, who can't quite be sure whether the President is or isn't Muslim, conveniently forgetting the heat he took over his Universal Church of Christ Pastor, is divisive, racist, and undermines a democracy in which almost 67 Million patriotic Americans voted for our current president.

As someone said yesterday, the Klan doesn't have to go out and recruit you with their hoods on anymore. Now they just go into their studio, take seat in their office, and repeat the same old lies to their listeners every day until it takes hold.

Rush Limbaugh always says he's "just joking." Peter always says he's "just asking the question." Neither is true. Neither is a responsible use of our airwaves.

The joys of the Free Market are few and far between for those of us in the 99%, but it looks like we are seeing a prime example now courtesy of Rush Limbaugh, Little Limbaughs everywhere, and a weak-willed Republican party that fears him more than they fear Iran. Think Progress has the gory details:

Premiere Networks is circulating a list of 98 advertisers who want to avoid "environments likely to stir negative sentiments."
"To all Traffic Managers: The information below applies to your Premiere Radio Networks commercial inventory...They've specifically asked that you schedule their commercials in dayparts or programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).'

You'll notice Randi Rhodes is not on the list, because she actually criticizes both parties and does not lie. You'll also notice Premier states the program directors already know those in question are offensive - interesting. Tom Leykis, out of L.A., used to be really good - until the right-wing money became too hard to resist. Mike Rosen never went as far as his KOA neighbor Rush. And though he still lies regularly, he may be the prime beneficiary of Rush's ruin.

But I am hoping David Sirota, who already has more listeners than Peter Boyles (on the 3rd Clear Channel station in Denver) picks up the pieces. And while Boyles still hosts racists like Joe Arpaio (bonus - Peter had him on to accuse The President of being a Foreigner), Sirota is willing to criticize any public official who falls down on the job, and he doesn't need to lie to do it. That's a solid value that advertisers can surely appreciate.

Peter Boyles going full birther:

"It's a very cool moment," Boyles said on the air. "It'll rock 'n' roll when this happens. ... Maybe other radio talk-show hosts will do the same and see what their audiences do."

Well, too many radio haters to count have gone on the birther kick. They do it to tweak the racists in their audience and to pretend they are independent of the views and desires of their corporate bosses. Here's what a one member of Boyles' key demographic did with his birther feelings:

Huff was stopped by Tennessee officers in April 2010 and told them he was bringing guns into the state from Dallas, Ga., to support efforts to arrest Monroe County officials who refused to indict Obama.
Huff was a part of a Georgia militia and the `birther' movement that disputes Obama's U.S. citizenship.
Officers testified Huff was carrying a loaded Colt .45 in a holster on his hip plus an assault rifle and 200 or 300 rounds of ammunition in a tool box in his truck. They said he also had a document he claimed was a "citizens' arrest warrant" for officials, saying they were domestic enemies and had been charged with treason.

Peter Boyles doesn't give a shit about our democracy. He would profess to loving the Constitution. But abuse of the First Amendment doesn't constitute love; it constitutes a desire to inflame ratings by any means necessary to enhance Clear Channel profits - a good amount of which go to Boyles. His abuse of our airwaves and the first amendment comes at our expense and his profit.

But that's all cool in Peter's book.

Callers and Guests Badly Needed at "Battle of Talk Show Hosts" Event

Talk radio is, basically, an entertainment medium, and it was proven Wednesday night on the stage of, appropriately enough, the Comedy Works in conservative Greenwood Village, where Denver's top talk-show hosts squared off in hyped "battle."

You'd expect to get plenty of meaninglessness from a two-hour event featuring 10 yappers skilled at yapping plus two moderators.

I mean, what were they thinking? How could a panel of 10 normal people converse intelligently in such a setting much less 10 talk-radio hosts?

And sure enough, it was pretty stupid-and yet enjoyable, to an extent.
The ten talk show hosts were brought up on the comedy stage five at a time.

The first group was: Rick Barber (KOA), Peter Boyles (KHOW), Jon Caldara (KOA), Craig Silverman (KHOW), and Brownie (KOA).

KOA's Steffan Tubbs and April Zesbaugh presented them with a "lightening" round of questions to which they had 15 seconds to respond.

The "in-depth" segment gave the yappers 30 seconds for their answers.

Asked what talk radio show he listens to, Caldara said, "What kind of loser listens to talk radio?" (Barber and later David Sirota admitted to listening to no talk radio, and Rosen said he enjoys his own podcasts the most, which may explain his re-use of old newspaper columns.)

To the question, should marijuana be legalized, Caldara said, "Of course. It makes Craig Silverman's voice bearable."

Silverman replied that he was "distracted" by the light bouncing off Caldara's bald head.

Things got testy when Caldara joked that Boyles wanted to hurt illegal immigrants.

"You've been funny all night, but that's offensive," Boyles shot back.

Round two featured five more white men: Dan Caplis (KHOW), Thom Hartmann (Syndicated nationally and my own favorite talk-show host), Tom Martino (KHOW), Mike Rosen (KOA), and David Sirota (AM 760).

This group was more interesting because they actually disagreed more often than not, as Sirota and Hartman are on the political left.

Asked who they favored for president, Caplis said Cain or Romney, Hartmann sort of said Obama, Martino said Cain, Rosen said Romney, and Sirota said he did not "give a shit."

Mike Rosen thought the smartest thing Obama did as President was "pick Joe Biden as his vice President, which makes Obama look smarter."

To the question, is Obama a socialist, Sirota said, "He and half the Democratic Party are corporate socialists."

Similarly, Sirota is ready to administer drug tests to welfare recipients as soon as bankers are tested for drugs.

At one point, Michael Brown kneeled at the crotch of Silverman, as if he were bowing to him, after Silverman said he planned to register as a Republican to ensure that the GOP picks moderate prez candidate.

"That's how Brownie got a job from Bush," said Caldara, who unfortunately gets my vote as the winner of the battle. The 15-second format suited his shallow worldview and potty mouth, as he acknowledged after the event.

The lightening rounds kept coming:

In 15 seconds, if Obama's Jobs Bill isn't the answer, what is?

Fifteen more seconds for, how would you solve I70's problems?

What has the Tea Party accomplished, if anything?

Does global warming exist?

Has the war on terror made us safer?

Do you want to build a wall on the southern border?

Is America in danger of losing the title of the most powerful nation in the world?

Sometimes, the guys got an extra two minutes to discuss this stuff, not just the 15 seconds.

Yes, it was ridiculous, but hey, it wasn't American Idol. It was much better. You could be entertained and learn something, which is right in line with modern politics.

But in the end, the second annual battle of the talk-show hosts proved my mantra that the best talk-radio shows have plenty of guests (and callers) on the air to take the focus off the yapping hosts.

With no guests and no callers, it gets boring, like this event did. I may like talk radio, but no way will I be attending next year's battle.

Peter Boyles is probably too cheap

It would really rock if Peter Boyles put up the $100 to get the Official Hawaiian Birth Certificate of President of the United States:

Some Hawaii lawmakers see a way out of the state budget hole by capitalizing on doubts about President Obama's birth certificate. Meanwhile, efforts to convince the so-called "birthers" that Obama's Hawaii birth is authentically documented have ended up backfiring in some recent cases.
Yet to this day, birthers still want to see for themselves whether Obama is a natural born citizen, a constitutional standard of eligibility for the office. Questions still flood the governors office and the Health Department, and lawmakers say it's time to make some money off of that while, they say, proving his Hawaii birth to each and every inquiry.
"If the people are so concerned about Barack Obama and if he was actually born in Hawaii, born in the United States, let them pay a fee of 100 bucks," said Rep. John Mizuno, one of the Democratic co-sponsors of the measure. "We can certainly use the money, and we don't need to hear their complaining anymore."

I hope they pass this bill. Then Peter Boyles can either put up or shut up about something someone of his intelligence, and his less intelligent listeners, should have accepted years ago.

KHOW's Glenn Beck: "You're going to have to shoot them in the head."

KHOW's Glenn Beck has now been found to have said the following about his (and his followers') political opposition (h/t Great Orange Satan):

Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government.
I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don't. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep's clothing - change the pose. You will get the ends.
You've been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You're going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.

Yes, what Glenn Beck says on KHOW over our airwaves in Denver is their responsibility: someone in management directly approved or had some say in scheduling his show. KHOW's license is held by Citicasters in Tulsa, and their license expires on 04/01/2013.

No, I will not differentiate between mediums since these guys write books, go on TV talk shows, where they are benign and mellow and plug their other TV and radio outlets where they can be themselves. It's all one big sewer-stream flowing into our political discourse.

And if anyone thinks Peter Boyles doesn't like being Beck's opening act, they don't know anything about the biz.

All of these people, who have surely claimed they are responsible citizens, while Democrats and Liberals and Progressives are not, have some responsibility for putting Glenn Beck on the air and encouraging his abuse of The First Amendment and his veiled threats on the lives of our Representatives.

Did you expect something like it to happen or were you surprised?

Both sides might do "it". That's the talking point. Mini-Limbaughs like Lou Pate on KOA dutifully started the process Saturday night. (Where do they find these infinite, cheap clones of Limbaugh, and do they all get a time slot on KOA?) Anyway, Lou says Democrats will blame Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin and 1,000 others for this avoidable tragedy. But Lou won't take responsibility for a word of it, even his own.

The "it", as we all know in this discussion, is two very different things: two different sets of rhetoric, different tactics with differences in scope and tone and intent. Our "side" does it here:

Their side does it in this chilling list of political and media right-wingers fantasizing about blood in the streets and a locked-and-loaded citizenry. Jon Caldara was saying last night that the rhetoric doesn't matter. I tend to agree with Krugman:

Where's that toxic rhetoric coming from? Let's not make a false pretense of balance: it's coming, overwhelmingly, from the right. It's hard to imagine a Democratic member of Congress urging constituents to be "armed and dangerous" without being ostracized; but Representative Michele Bachmann, who did just that, is a rising star in the G.O.P.

If Krugman is wrong and Caldara is right, then I fully expect Jon-boy stop talking about taxes and privatizing everything....because it doesn't matter.

So we await the list of National and Local Major Media and Political Figures on the Liberal side who do the same as the Conservatives who claim they do.
Republicans don't apologize. They reload, they up the ante, and they urge the kinds of things that happened this weekend all while saying it's a "joke" or they were "misquoted." Peter Boyles disgustingly said of a local Birther/Teahadist's contribution to our discussion: "It'll rock and roll." Glenn Beck comes on right after Boyles. The Party of Personal Responsibility wants none even as they pump up the volume.

So Lou Pate, Professional Liar, started the push back Saturday night on KOA. He was on the defensive again Sunday and Jon Caldara followed up with further obfuscations, something he does so well. It will continue in earnest on Monday on all the usual media outlets - 850KOA being the most prominent.
