It's that time of year when media outlets churn out their retrospectives for the year.  The Associated Press has come out with its list of the top 10 news stories for Colorado in 2007, and number one is . . . the Rockies going to the World Series?  Seriously?  Number two is a tie between Denver being awarded the Democratic National Convention and the effects of last winter's blizzards on ranchers (and more to the point, their cattle) in eastern Colorado.  Either of those would rank ahead of the World Series on my list.

Fortunately, this is a blog, so we can weigh in with our own opinions of the list -- what should have been higher ranked and what was left out.  I think Mark Udall's announcement that he will run for U.S. Senate and the subsequent Democratic primary fight in his old district is the top story that got left out.  Also not making the top ten list was the battle to stop the Army from condemning private property in the Piñon Canyon area.  Ritter's executive order on state employee partnerships made the list, but not his veto of the reform of the Labor Peace Act.

Sound off in the comments on what you think were the top Colorado news stories of 2007, and take the poll.

Not exactly the top stories but... (0.00 / 0)
I wrote this awhile ago but I still think it holds true. This is what I think are the big issues we face in this country. The rest, including Iraq, is details.

Tough choices (4.00 / 1)
Let's eliminate them and see what sticks:

  1. Rockies get to World Series - sports...neat but inconsequential.
  2. Democratic Convention awarded to Denver - maybe
  3. Blizzards devastate High Plains ranchers - how can we have devastating blizzards if there's global warming? (not eliminated, just pointing out idiotic winger logic.)
  4. Joe Nacchio convicted of insider trading - this might be it, with spying thrown in
  5. Murder of Bronco Darrent Williams - dumb sports millionaires, shouldn't even be news.
  6. Battle to save the Roan Plateau - #2
  7. Ward Churchill fired - not necessarily good, but knew it would happen almost immediately
  8. Murders at New Life Church - Ted's meltdown was worse, though it seems the shooter was disappointed in Ted. Something about false prophets would apply.
  9. Ritter OKs partnerships with employee groups - turning the tide for labor in CO? #3
  10. Gunman shot at state Capitol - stupid people/gun tricks. Out.
  11. Udall announces for Senate; CO-02 primary - longterm good news, can't tell for '08
  12. Fight against Piñon Canyon expansion - as much as Bush has failed our military good rhetoric and Dem strategy should have made this impossible within 24 hours. Tie it into the seeming arbitrary change to NORAD's mission and you have a more significant affect on CO.

Tough choices.....good questions....

I agree with your Rockies/Williams stories.  Our society worships our sports figures for reasons I can't fathom.

I would put the Roan and Pinon Canyon stories at #1 and #2.  These issues, unlike the silly sports stories, will have lasting effects on all Coloradans.  If drilling happens on the Roan, another spectacular tract of land will be spoiled for generations to come.  If the Army gets to expand their range, it sets an unwelcome precedent for obtrusive land-grabbing.  Both deal strongly with Bigs: Big Energy and Big Military.  The libertarian streak of Coloradans cannot be disregarded here.

Nacchio is probably the sneak story of the year - it seems big, but is probably bigger when the larger story is brought into context.

Churchill - finale to a completely overblown story.  Shouldn't have made the Top 10.

New Life Church and Captial Gunman.  Hmmm, what's the underlying theme??  Crazy white people.  Isn't that odd?  I mean, according to the right-wingers, only brown people commit crimes in this country.  Some honest reporting about common themes regarding these crimes would be nice.

Ritter's partnerships - pretty big story, not for reasons the media have attacked Ritter with though.

Udall - well within the Top 10.  Switching out a rubber-stamp do-nothing Senator with someone who can more ably represent the state?  Huge!

Blizzards - able to break the short-term drought we were under.  Economic impacts still being felt.  Yep - Top 10 story.

Democratic Convention - important story.  The relevance of the West is starting to move to the forefront of Democratic circles.  Not that the Las Vegas debate supported that concept.  It's importance will continue to resonate throughout next year.
