Angie Paccione Announces She is No Longer a Candidate for Congress

New Leadership Post Leads to International Opportunity

Statement by Angie Paccione - September 26, 2007 11:00 AM MDT

Good Morning.

There are no words adequate enough to describe the privilege I've had representing the people of Fort Collins as their State Representative and as the Democratic candidate for the people of the 4th Congressional District.  In 2000, when there was no democratic candidate on the ballot for the 4th CD, I was motivated to enter politics to fill the void in leadership. At that time I offered my service as the voice of the people in representative government. I am forever changed, forever grateful, and forever indebted to the people for the opportunity they gave me to serve them.

[continued after the flip]
johne :: Angie Paccione announcement

I have a passion to serve people by doing whatever I can to unleash their greatness. This is what has always compelled me. I used my skills as an athlete to serve our country in international competition, I used my academic talent to serve our youth as an educator, and I used my political position to serve the people I represented by giving them hope, making the system work for them, and empowering them to participate in politics as
well.

Since September of 2005 I have been on a mission to win the 4th Congressional district because I believe and many others do as well, that I would be a better, more effective representative for the people of this district. As an elected official I have always focused on what's right, not on who's right. That has allowed me to reach across political divides and partisan politics to get things done for the people of our great state. I am proud of the work I was able to do as a lead sponsor of legislation and as a co-sponsor. I have always been accessible to my constituents, I have
always been responsive to their concerns, and I have always worked with members of both political parties.

Last night I had the privilege of speaking to hundreds of high school students and their parents. I told them what I have been telling young people for nearly three decades. to have the courage to say "yes" to opportunity. Today I am here to do the very thing I encourage others to do to say yes to an amazing opportunity that has presented itself to me. Since January, I have been working with Pathways to Leadership Inc., a company that gives businesses a competitive advantage over others by helping them unleash the greatness in their employees, teams, and organization.  This is a company that changes the results people and organizations deliver - because it changes the lives of the people in the organization.

I thought that I might be able to work with Pathways to Leadership and campaign for Congress at the same time. However, the opportunities with Pathways have grown and I must say "yes" to those opportunities. In addition to locations in the US, my work with Pathways will be taking me to Australia, Switzerland, Mexico, and Italy in the very near future. In those travels, I will be working with businessmen and women who are motivated to improve their leadership skills and the wellness culture in their workplace.

This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I have wrestled with my decision for a number of weeks now. The campaign is very strong, the support is broad-based, and I still believe I am the best candidate to win the seat.  However, I am motivated by a passion to serve and my opportunity with Pathways gives me the ability to serve immediately. I could spend the next 14 months campaigning for the opportunity to make a difference or I could spend the next 14 months actually making a difference in the lives of
others.

So, today I am announcing that I am ending my campaign for congress in the 4th district.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank my staff, my volunteers, and all those who invested time, energy, and hope in our campaign. I am thrilled that I have been a vehicle for their involvement in the political process.  Those that have been empowered by my campaign will continue to use their voice to impact the politics of their communities. I am certain of it. And although I won't be their candidate I will continue to be their friend and will fight side by side with them to change our country and the world.

Good Luck to you Angie!  Don't forget us little people.  BTW, Pathways to Leadership's website can be found here.

congratulations to Angie... (0.00 / 0)
Good for her.

Also good for CD-4. I'd like to see this pared down to a two-way primary at the most.

Best of luck to you Angie (4.00 / 1)
I think she's correct - there are a lot of people that want something better in CO-04.  They'll get that as they continue to work.

So one big question this generates is, "Can Betsy raise the money and her name ID to compete with Marilyn?"

I suppose a second question is, "How much of a challenge will Eric Eidsness present?"  He's belonged to three different parties in what, three different years?  Or is it three cycles?  Are people taking him seriously?

He's taking himself seriously... (0.00 / 0)
that's scary enough. I don't know much about Markey, but at least now, I don't have to make a decision in the Primary.

E-mail from Rep. DeGette: (0.00 / 0)
DEGETTE STATEMENT ON ANGIE PACCIONE WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) today released the following statement on Angie Paccione's decision to leave the race for the fourth Congressional seat in Colorado: "As the Dean of the Colorado Delegation, I want to thank Angie Paccione for her dedicated service to our state. She has been a highly-qualified candidate who would have made an excellent representative for the people of the fourth Congressional District, as well as Colorado.
"I am confident that Betsey Markey will be a formidable candidate and  will prevail in securing another Democratic House seat for Colorado. She is well-qualified and experienced in the issues facing our state. I look forward to working with her as part of the ColoradoDelegation."

Through all the parties and all the times I've heard him talk, he's proven to be sincere about what he says.  It's always the same story: read the constitution, get us out of Iraq, leave my personal life alone.

Betsy has tried hard to distance herself from Ken Salazar, but has used his connections to gain support and to raise money.  As a Weld Co. progressive, I'm going to take the guy who says it the same way every time, in the place of the lady who wants you to believe that she's not Salazar's girl, but uses him to make her viable.

I WILL NOT vote for Betsy Markey under any circumstances, based entirely on Ken Salazar's voting record.

Oh that makes a lot of sense (4.67 / 3)
So vote for the Reagan Administration EPA official instead.  Brilliant.

What is even worse (4.00 / 2)
... is to simply assume that since Betsy worked for Salazar that she would vote just like him or is anything like him.

As I've written before, after meeting with her numerous times and having her come to Denver to meet some Dems at my neighborhood coffee shop (where she was asked very pointed questions).  She certainly comes off as quite progressive. She is against vouchers, hard-line immigration reform as passed by the state, and the war.

Congratulations Angie (4.00 / 1)
It is exciting when someone as capable as Angie is recognized by a major corporation for the assets she can bring Pathways to Leardership on a full-time basis. Congratulations Angie.

It is now time for those of us who have supported Angie in the past to go forward and support Betsy Markey.  We are fortunate to have such a remarkable candidate who can represent the Democratic principles so well in the 4th district and be able to beat Ms. Musgrave.

I've heard her speak once and was impressed by the depth of her knowledge of the issues that face all Americans and especially those who live in the 4th. She is an independent thinker who will work for all the citizens of Colorado, especially the 4th.

I went to Betsy's website to see what was written today about Angie's departure from the web.  It was a very gracious statement - as I fully expected. I urge all readers to do so - www.betsymarkey.com.

here it is (4.00 / 1)
linky:

Earlier today, Angie Paccione announced that she is no longer a candidate for Congress.

I want to congratulate Angie on her new role with Pathways to Leadership, a business consulting firm. The job and organization sound ideally suited to Angie's considerable talents, and they are lucky to have her.

As Democrats, Angie and I share a firm commitment to bringing change to Washington by defeating Marilyn Musgrave in 2008. Our member of Congress should bring reason and common-sense leadership on the issues that we all care about - getting our brave servicemen and women out of Iraq in an intelligent manner, making health care more affordable and more accessible, and making sure our schools remain among the best in the nation. Marilyn Musgrave has failed us by not focusing on those issues, and it is my hope that Democrats across the Fourth District will unite behind my candidacy and help me bring the change we need to Washington.

I will work hard to win the trust and support of Angie's followers.  The commitment, energy and enthusiasm they brought to Angie's efforts has been extraordinary.

I look forward to the path ahead.

Betsy

Refunding Donations? RMN says so. (0.00 / 0)
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that she plans on refunding donations.

It is interesting that her decision came just before the end of a reporting quarter. I wonder what her balance sheet looks like.

Welchert & Britz normally charge a hefty fee, and there are all sorts of start up costs associated with a campaign. I wonder what is left, and who will get the disbursements on the tail end.

Angie is awesome for offering to return the $, but how does that work exactly?

Has Angie Returned the Fund-raising Money ? (0.00 / 0)
I've run into several friends who gave money to Angie's campaign and have yet to hear from her with a check for the money they gave her.  The recognize there are some expenses that have to come out first but by now they believe, a month later from her announcement, that they should know more about this.
