MAJOR UPDATE (3:30pm Mountain Time):Ted Haggard just stepped down as President of the New Life Church and the National Association of Evangelicals according to the Channel 9 News. A news conference was setup by several evangelical leaders to support Haggard but was quickly cancelled before the announcement of his "temporary" leave

Cross-posted from Kos here

This news is burning through the state faster than the Hayman Fire.

Pastor Ted Haggard, leader of the 14,000 member New Life Church and President of the National Association of Evangelicals, has been outed as gay, accused of paying a prostitute and (if that wasn't enough)being a meth user. Haggard is probably next in line to James Dobson and Pat Robertson when it comes to influential Evangelicals.

Denver's 9 News has been investigating the story for two months and announced it yesterday.

So far Haggard denies the allegations but I personal am looking forward to the Jimmy Swaggart like apology I HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU MY LORD!

Oreo :: UPDATE: Ted Haggard from New Life Church Outed as Gay (Voicemails recorded)
http://www.9news.com/...

DENVER - A gay man and admitted male escort claims he has had an ongoing sexual relationship with a well-known Evangelical pastor from Colorado Springs.

Mike Jones told 9 Wants to Know Investigative Reporter Paula Woodward he has had a "sexual business" relationship with Pastor Ted Haggard for the past three years.

Haggard is the founder and senior leader of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. The church has 14,000 members.

He is also president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an organization that represents millions of people.

Haggard is married with five children and an outspoken critic of gay marriage.

Haggard, interviewed by Channel 9, had a very interesting response to the allegations.

"I did not have a homosexual relationship with a man in Denver," said Haggard. "I am steady with my wife. I'm faithful to my wife."

"I don't know if this is election year politics or if this has to do with the marriage amendment or what it is, but I'm not even the guy who will investigate it or question it. I don't know what the dynamics are, but this independent group will come in and do that."

So he's basically saying he didn't have sex with a man in Denver which could very well be true. Now somebody needs to ask him if he's ever had sex with a man anywhere.

Ahhh the hypocrisy of it all!

Here's a good interview with Haggard on YouTube in which he claims to have a weekly conference call with Bush

Update: Thanks pdq from Kos!

According to the Rocky Mountain News, Mike Jones has admitted that he has voicemail recordings.

Jones also said during his appearance with Boyles that he was paid money by Haggard, who made frequent trips to Denver for sexual liaisons, that he has recorded voicemails and a letter from Haggard, and that he had also witnessed Haggard use methamphetamine.

Any family going through something like this would have a hard time, and I feel sorry for them as people because their worldview has been shattered.

On the other hand, they believed that dad/hubby was a good gay basher and loved him for that. In a way it's a good thing for the world if high-level evengelicals have to learn to actually "Love your neighbor" (even if he's gay) like that Jesus guy talked about.

Athens Trumps Jerusalem (Again) (0.00 / 0)
Over and  over again the christainists insist that they possess a superior morality than those of us who walk by sight rather than faith. Over and over again their assertions are proven false. The christianists preach divine command morality and an ethic based on discharge of revenge. The older European moralities focused on self-knowledge and the awareness that pride and abusiveness was a kind of insanity that led to destruction. The old vision was rational and sane. The "morality" touted by the christianists sickens people and, with its focus on evening the score, perpetuates suffering. If the accusations against Rev. Mr. Haggard prove true, perhaps he will be motivated to read the Greek tragedies and philosophers and become wise. The key words: "Know thyself."

There is no sympathy available (4.00 / 4)

for any of those hypocrits.  Remember they have spent their lives and positions of power to hurt, damage and destroy imnumerable lives of law abiding people.  They  refuse to admit they are gay or bi in a way that is desicable try to prove to themselves they are not what they are.  They intentionally cause hurt and pain on others.  How many people have been physically attacked, how many have been killed because they have been taught and indoctrinated that gays are bad.  Think of Matthew Sheppard, think of the gays and transgender people who have been attacked and killed on the West Slope.  There is no sympathy available for those who intentionally hurt to keep themselves in the closet and hidden from public sight.

David Bath is another infamous one in Colorado.  He avoided jailtime because of technicality in the law he wrote to punish.  He is still practicing law instead of being convicted of a sexual crime against minors.  He spent a lot of time and energy attacking gays with the power of being a legislator.  At least he had the forethought to video his gay behavior.  Unfortunately he  got off on a technicality.

I know this may sound super-paranoid but this has the earmarks of a classic Rovian dirty trick - Conjure up a tale of a sinner (Jones) outing a poweful Christian evangelical (Haggard) one week before a major election, creating temporary chaos and confusion with the base, then release documents proving Jones to be a liar, possibly even in league with the Dems which infuriates the base even more and drives them to the polls to vote for anything with an 'R' in front of it's name.

Pain? (4.00 / 1)
I have no sympathy for him for all the pain and anguish he has caused to the LGBT community across this country.

I have marginal sympathy for his family who must now navigate an ugly nightmare of publicity and denigration.

Perhaps Mr. Haggard should have read his bible a little more:

"He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind." Proverbs, 11:29.

So turnabout is fair play? (4.00 / 1)
So we turn around and blind and maim each other until our desire for vengeance is sated?

If we're going to quote the Bible, perhaps we should pay heed to the passage that says, "Vengenace is mine, saith the Lord."  Or the bit that goes, "Judge not, lest ye be judged."

Look, I don't agree with Ted Haggard. I'm opposed to his stand on homosexuality.

At the same time, this is a tawdry story. It's gossip, and it's why we impeached a President eight years ago. We're better than this. This is no one's business but his family's, and if anything happened, they have to deal with it either in the privacy of their family or the privacy of their church.

What people do in their bedroom is their business.

And as for the jubilation that's being expressed by some folks--the next time one of our own falls victim to some personal peccadillo, I hope you're just as jubilant. And I hope that all of you are as pure as the driven snow.

rnoboa , Excuse me?

Are you really suggesting we should let this hippocrite enjoy some privacy in his "time of need" when he spends a great deal of time behind his pulpit and his tax-exempt status bashing gays?
Do you think Repugs would show any compassion for someone whom they consider a political enemy? Niceness just won't cut it while these guys are in power. Get 'em out and then we can talk about kinder, gentler treatment of our fellow human beings.
Until then, it's going to have to be this way.
BTW, "We" didn't impeach Clinton, THEY did.

So how far are you willing to go? (0.00 / 0)
How far? How long do you stare into the abyss, before you realize it stares deep into you?

Where do we draw the line? Where do we say, this far, and no further?

I don't think these kinds of "issues" merit consideration. They don't. They didn't when it was about Clinton, and they don't now, not when we've lost 103 men and women in Iraq; not when we've left a soldier behind in Sadr City.

And as for the pastor deserving what he got, no one deserves to have their lives dragged through the muck of the freak show.

That millions of lives have suffered pain and agony because of what he preached isn't in doubt. That pain and agony will not be relieved because a Congressman's double life has been unmasked, or because a preacher fell from grace.

That pain and agony can only be relieved when we all realize that we are all God's children, and that we are all precious in His sight--regardless of whom it is that we choose to share our lives with.

It's an issue because he made it an issue. (4.00 / 6)
Sorry, gotta disagree with you on this.  Big time.

Look, if Ted Haggard were just some regular guy, or even a celebrity, I'd be on your side.  But he's not.  He's a malevolent force in the world.  He preaches hatred and intolerance.  That's why it's an issue, not because it's gossip or funny or just another scandal.  If he never mentioned homosexuality, if he weren't the leader of a group (as others point out) that actively promotes the idea that homosexuality is a perversion and an evil, I'd be with you in saying that his personal life is his business.  But these are people whose only agenda seems to be getting into my bedroom and preventing my partner and I from sharing the legal protections and rights that heterosexuals do.  That's why it's an issue.  He's a hypocrite of the first order.  A complete and total slimeball whose entire facade has been a lie, who shrieked and incited hatred of gays to protect his festering secret.  So, in this case, it's absolutely a valid issue.  I don't take pleasure in seeing his life ruined, but I do think that the more these people are exposed for what they are, the better off we all are.

That's assuming it's true, of course.  But I'm guessing that if they didn't have some kind of proof, 9 news wouldn't have run the story after looking at it for two months.

A big sham (0.00 / 0)
Haggard appears to be the ultimate coward. Judging by his actions and associations, he abhorred and despised those who had the courage to be themselves. Yet, he was never courageous enough to be himself openly. Imagine what a sham his life must have been.

From the NAE Website (4.00 / 1)
This is from a 2004 statement on homosexuality from the National Association of Evangelicals:

We believe that homosexuality is not an inherited condition in the same category as race, gender, or national origin, all of which are free from moral implication. We believe that homosexuality is a deviation from the Creator’s plan for human sexuality. While homosexuals as individuals are entitled to civil rights, including equal protection of the law, the NAE opposes legislation which would extend special consideration to such individuals based on their “sexual orientation.” Such legislation inevitably is perceived as legitimatising the practice of homosexuality and elevates that practice to a level of an accepted moral standard. While maintaining our opposition to proposed so-called “Gay Rights” legislation, where such legislation has been enacted into law, NAE strongly urges that churches and religious organizations be exempted from compliance by amendment to the law. The position and practice of such organizations regarding homosexuality are determined by their religious convictions. This we hold to be a grave matter of religious freedom.

The upshot is that since the NAE views GLBT people as "sinners" the organization is unwilling to support the kind of legal protections already available to other historically oppressed groups. Discrimination is no less discriminatory when it's tarted up in the language of moralistic concern. Worse, the evangelicals give an argument based on the purported inerrant authority of the Bible. In doing so they claim protection for their conduct under the 1st Amd. while opting out of the responsibility to give reasoned arguments for their position in the public forum. Thus, they seek to criticize others while holding themselves and their purported divine command morality above public scrutiny. What a bunch of freeloaders.

There is no elite, so take your place in the driver's seat.

[ Parent ]
Fine, I guess I'm wrong... (4.00 / 1)
I guess we're all pure and we can all stand to judge and be judged in turn. I guess none of us has ever erred, has ever cheated, has ever lied, and I guess we've all led lives of unimpeachable integrity.

Sorry, I'm not buying it.

The larger point that I was aiming at wasn't whether Haggard deserved what he got.

It was that no one who is considering living a public life can stand to live that life in the spotlight--not when the spotlight is shined upon every facet of that life.

We're all broken--none of us is perfect. We're all flawed. And I take no joy in seeing someone else prove that to be the case.

When we concentrate on the personal at the expense of the public, what do we gain? What? So Haggard hoisted himself on his hypocrisy--now what? Do you seriously think that's going to cause anyone affiliated with him to think twice?

Hardly.

Public figure or not, we are all entitled to a zone of privacy. You don't surrender that when you become a public figure, and I don't care what the freak show rules are.

If we thought the sniffing around Clinton's personal life was out-of-bounds, then so is this. The rules don't change, the principles don't change, merely because it's in our benefit. And if you believe they do, then that makes you no different than the Republicans. We're better than this.

If you detect a note of self-interest here, you're right.

I've often thought about running for office. And I won't do it. Not if this is the payback. I've led an interesting life in my short life. I'm also a flawed man. I've done things in my life that I'm not proud of. And I refuse to live my life watching over my shoulder, wondering if somewhere down the line, something's going come out, knowing that I'm not going to be judged on the content of my character or the quality of my ideas, but on the varied shadows of my past.

Look, let's defeat the anti-gay zealots. I'm all for that. One of my four cousins is gay and HIV positive. I'm there with you.

But let's beat them on the merit and quality of our ideas. This isn't it--this is cheap and tawdry and in the end, it won't convince anyone one way or the other. If you're anti-gay, you'll think he fell victim to his lust for the flesh. And if you support gays, you'll think he's a hypocrite (which he is).

And in the end, what is gained? Haggard will be replaced by either Richard Cizik or his current understudy, and Rob Brendle will take over at New Life. And we're right back where we started.

ad astra, per aspera // keep calm & carry on

It's not about the private life (4.00 / 2)
It's about the hypocricy of having gay relationships while condemning gays.  I could care less about it except for that.

If I were a politician who condemned mixed-race marriages, I'd expect nothing less than my opponent "outing" me for carrying on an affair with a woman of a different race, or for being myself of mixed lineage.  If I railed against earmarks, I'd expect to be hoist on my own petard when someone unearthed hundreds of thousands of dollars that I had earmarked.  That carries right through to Foley getting (possibly) caught up in violating the very acts he worked to criminalize, and it applies too to Rev. Haggard for acting against his own very public preaching.

Sure, no-one's perfect.  But there's flawed, and there's what Haggard did; they're not the same.

Hypocricy (4.00 / 2)
I'd extend this even further to every corner of the right-wing agenda.  They rail and rail and rail about every issue possible, then behind the scenes engage in the activities they're trying to control.  It's bullshit.

If it turns out Haggard did what Jones said he did, then I think Jones did the right thing.  Haggard made the decision to be as influential as he was in politics and participate in activities that potentially were illegal and immoral.  Instructing people how to live their lives and helping to construct governmental policy toward the same end and then living his own in an opposite manner is obscene.

If Haggard were not a key player for Bush, (0.00 / 0)
this would not be so interesting.

One of my personal goals is to weaken the strangehold far-right christians have on this nation's world view and its politics.  Hopefully I don't need to explain why.  To whatever extent Ted Haggard's double life shakes the faith of his Republican acolytes in Colorado Springs, I am glad for it.

If he and Dobson and others didn't distribute voter guides, do GOTV, and provide support for Bush and Cheney's rare visits, I would laugh them off as another bunch of fools wasting everyone's time with archaic ritual, misguided but largely irrelevant to me.

But these Christo-fascists have dedicated themselves to making life hard for gay people, as one example.

Society is measured by how we treat our disadvantaged and downtrodden, not whether we forgive the rich and powerful who take our money and our trust and then deceive us.

Oh, so he's confessed to "some of the charges?" (0.00 / 0)

Which ones?  Soliciting a prostitute?  Having sex with another man?  Using meth?  Lying?  Hypocrisy?

Wouldn't confessing to just one of these condemn him to the lowest circle of his own private hell?

Too bad he's not Catholic.  A quit stop into the confessional, a few Hail Marys and he'd be good to go on preaching his filth to the 14,000 saps who come to see him each Sunday.

There'll be no forgiveness coming from me.

Not what tapes say!  Tapes say Haggard was a regular user.  Tapes say Haggard knew where Jones's domicile was.

On to the other part: Jones, on MSNBC, says Haggard discussed fantasies of orgies with up to 6 18-22 year-old guys.  That he met "Al" once a month for three years for "pretty much vanilla sex".

If there's a chance if this will effect Republican voter turnout in the Springs on Tuesday? Conservative Christians were already somewhat disenchanted with Bush and the Republicans...maybe this will be the final straw and make more of them "protest" by not voting. Could be beneficial to Fawcett!
