Oh, man, I wish I had that little siren thingy that Drudge runs for breaking news - the repudiation of Doug Lamborn as Republican nominee for Colorado's Fighting Fifth is complete.

There is no good way Republicans can spin this news. But spin and spin they will. What else do they have after 6 years of George W. Bush and his Crony Capitalists?

HEADLINE: Joel Hefley Ponders Unretiring due to Extreme Views of Republican Nominee

Zappatero :: CO-05: Hefley Might Un-Retire, Repudiates "Unethical" Lamborn
Hefley just stomped on the throat of Doug Lamborn's campaign. From the Colorado Springs Gazette:
Rep. Joel Hefley is seriously considering running as a writein candidate to retain his seat rather than risk handing it over to Republican nominee Doug Lamborn.

...snip...

Hefley, who has represented the 5th Congressional District for 20 years, has been the subject of a three-week push by high-level Republicans to take this nearly unheard-of step, Littleton said Monday.

Since Lamborn edged former Hefley aide Jeff Crank in a six-way primary on Aug.  8, a number of party leaders, including elected officials, have begged Hefley to  run again because of concerns about how Lamborn conducted his primary campaign,  said Littleton and another party activist, who asked to remain anonymous.

A Lamborn spokesman said the campaign was not aware of the possible write-in effort, but after learning about it from  a reporter Monday, Lamborn attempted to reach Hefley.

Out of the loop much, Doug?

Hefley wants to avoid "allowing someone who is very unethical to take over his seat," she said.

Joel Hefley was the Chairman of the Ethics Committee in the House. He was too ethical for Tom DeLay. He just called Doug Lamborn "unethical".

Doug Lamborn has been repudiated by significant parts of the Republican establishment here in the Springs. The unity picture taken after Lamborn's win was exactly what I said it was: phony.

Will Republicans wake up and choose the best candidate for this office, Jay Fawcett?

Will they deny Joel Hefley his well-deserved retirement?

Will "Focus" Dobson and "New Life" Haggard acknowledge the repudiation of one-issue fundamentalist poilitics and do what's right for Colorado and CD-5?

As they say: "Stay tuned, folks. News at 11."

UPDATE: Jay Fawcett and Bill Winter (CO-06 v. Tancredo) will be guest of Howie Klein's Blue America series at FireDogLake on Saturday, 9/2, at 2PM EST. Catch Jay and Bill this Saturday!

Real reasons . . . (0.00 / 0)
Am I the only one who is reading this thinking that Hefley is more concerned that Fawcett will win this seat and that is the real reason why he is considering this option?

Write ins a tough on electronic voting (0.00 / 0)
so there is an interesting point - does this take the electronic voters out of the election? What does that do to turn out and voting lines? Everything I have heard is that write ins are damn hard on the electronic machines. This could change a lot of things. I REALLY recommned absentee ballots now.

Write-Ins (0.00 / 0)
In Mesa County, we use the ES&S machines.

Doing a write-in is easy.  That doesn't mean people will do it, but it's easy.

There's a "simulator" here on the ES&S website.

When you get to the screen that shows the ballot, just click "write in" and you're get a touchscreen laid out like a typewriter keyboard.

I don't know what kind of machines they use in Hefley's district.

I think the machines are a mix... (0.00 / 0)
The eSlates don't have a touch screen (the vendor who came to our party meeting called it a "tough" screen - then proceeded to pound it with the tip of a pen, making me wince...).  They have to use a dial to scroll through letters in order to write in a candidate; it's inconvenient, but at least it's accessible for the handicapped...

The SoS page had a list of election machinery; I think El Paso was mixed, and I'd imagine that the rural counties are mixed, too - at least between counties.

I don't know (4.00 / 1)
It's difficult to run a write-in, doubly so when there's already a designated nominee from your party and you've said you're retiring.

I read it more that Hefley would rather see Jay in office than Lamborn, if it came to that.

Deadline (0.00 / 0)
is 5PM today for Hef.

I'm thinking it's a combination of things (4.00 / 1)
including your comment as well as Lamborn is an unethical asshole that has alienated his own base, Hefley's chosen successor lost to Lamborn so latent resentment is kicking in, and Fawcett is looking better and better in a district Republicans never dreamed they would have to put a dime into to win.

[ Parent ]
Thought I'd put a little link (4.00 / 2)
here to your kos diary, so's folks could make clicky.

Recommend this little jasper!

Jay must be feeling just dandy today!

history? (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know if an incumbent Representative has ever run a write-in campaign?  Anywhere in the country?

With the right name and the right campaign organization, a write-in candidacy for an incumbent has a real chance.

Anyone have time to look it up?

from the article........ (0.00 / 0)
"If Hefley runs, he will be taking on not only his party’s nominated successor, but history. Only four members of Congress have been elected via the write-in process, and it has not happened in 24 years."

[ Parent ]
I did a little research... (0.00 / 0)
In the last five elections, Hefley's "worst" year was 2002. He got 69% of the vote against Curtis Imrie. Just based on the dislike/hatred for Lamborn that I've read in the Gazette's Letters and on Colorado Pols, it seems reasonable to me to assume that Lamborn would be looking at 59%. So that leaves Jay with 41%. So Joel would have to take Lamborn down by 18 points. Is it reasonable to think that Hefley (and other write-in candidate that nobody cares about) can take 30% of Republican voters from Lamborn?

If he really tries, yes. (0.00 / 0)
If he makes sure people know he's running and is willing to trash Lamborn like he did in the Gazette piece, he can certainly make it happen.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
I don't doubt that a popular incumbent could siphon off a considerably number of votes. The question is if it could be enough to eliminate Lamborn, but not enough to beat Fawcett...we can hope! (Anybody know the rules in these situations? Would there be a runoff?)
