Mike Rosen's Hatred Is Overwhelming - Case Example

by: WeatherDem

Thu Dec 30, 2010 at 12:40:54 PM MST

Occasionally, I will read Mike Rosen's editorials in the Denver Post.  Mostly, it's just to keep the latest right-wing hate messages fresh in my mind.  His column always includes lies and innuendo.  He usually resorts to name-calling.  Like most Teabaggers, he can't seem to help himself.  It is rare, however, that he achieves what he achieved today: multiple groups got lumped into the same hate speech.

The supposed topic is the repeal of the odious, unconstitutional "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy keeping certain Americans from serving their country as proudly as Americans who more neatly fit the idyllic vision of an imaginary America that Rosen and other scared, angry white males hold dear.

WeatherDem :: Mike Rosen's Hatred Is Overwhelming - Case Example
First, hatred of women,

When she [former Rep. Pat Schroeder] advocated the removal of restrictions on women in combat, it was to advance the cause of radical feminism.

then the real purpose of this diatribe, Rosen's hatred of homosexuals:

The same can be said for those gay activists whose main objective was to score a symbolic equal rights victory regardless of its toll on the military.

followed by those durned lib'ruls

Public opinion polls showing support for gays in the military include the views of a majority of people with no military experience and no desire to join - liberal sociology professors, for example, who might make lousy leathernecks.

But don't worry, Rosen's warrior-worship tendencies come out shining:

Far more significant will be the damage to careers of soldiers and their officers accused of insensitivity, and retention and recruitment losses of those with a warrior disposition - people we can least afford to lose - who will spurn military careers because of religious, moral or cultural objections to open homosexuality.

Heaven forbid a few bigots don't join or stay in the military.  It would be far better, according to Rosen, if the bigots are allowed to openly display their hatred than allowing Americans who want to volunteer to actually do so.  There will be no law preventing bigots from being openly bigoted, although that might do more to improve overall morale.

I have a better idea.  Let's pass a law that keeps white, warrior worshipping, others-hating males from displaying those characteristics in public if they want the privilege of serving their country.  Then maybe Rosen will want to seriously address civil rights issues.

This is no longer the 1750s, Mr. Rosen.  Most of us are thankful that this country has moved beyond the ownership of certain human beings and the open denigration of one of the sexes.  Advocating for the outright discrimination of a demographic is morally repugnant.

Letting women fight in wars where more women than combatants die is radical?
I'm so out of touch.

Thank *God* 'TailGunner' Bob is off the radio
he'd be screeching like a stuck pig.......or something else.

Didn't know he was off
Shows how much I accidentally trip over the KOA part of the dial.  Bob was among the worst of the worst.

I had never read anything
by Mr. Rosen before. Thanks for sharing. Now I feel like I need to take a shower. Wow! Radical Feminists, that's so 1970s and gay activists - you know you can't trust them. What about third party outings, email snooping, stuff like that?

and another thing
No one would ever accuse me of being a [gasp] gay activist. I have always thought the worst aspect of DADT was kicking out the translators. Most translators don't carry rifles, shower with other people, or serve in front-line combat positions. How does it help our national security interest when translators are kicked out? Makes no sense.

Good point
It's always frustrating to hear how much material our intelligence entities, including those within the military, collect that goes untranslated because we don't have enough qualified personnel.  If someone wants that job, and are qualified for it, it shouldn't matter what they do within their personal lives, as long as it's legal.

Rosen and his ilk would prefer more sexual purity, however.

How often do those making the most noise about this push themselves on those they're sexually attracted to?  Probably much more often than they would ever care to admit.

Good picture below.  Thanks for sharing.

A Present for Mr. Rosen

He also made some worthwhile factual clarifications.
Most importantly, recognizing that the ban on gays serving in the military was a Congressional act intended to thwart the efforts of President Clinton to be gay friendly, and that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" itself, the executive order, was an effort to mitigate the negative impact of that Congressional action.

I would give you one point
while I think Rosen made a good point about the law, history of law, etc. we still have to account for administration of the policy as opposed to the policy itself. In practice commanders were free to conduct witch hunts, snoop in personal emails, respond to rumors, etc. That sure doesn't sound like what any reasonable person would take as the purpose. Shouldn't Don't Ask really mean Don't Ask?

Indeed it was
Thanks for pointing that out.  I'm not sure the history of who did what when was in question, however.

Rosen didn't present a cogent argument why the executive order shouldn't be turned over by Congressional action today.  He railed against a sub-population of Americans based on hate and fear.  He can make factually-based arguments, he just has to want to do so.

Vietnam Vet
Unlike the poll takers Rosen characterizes, I'm a decorated combat pilot. Of course there were gay men serving at the Air Base where I was stationed. No one in their right mind would send anyone home for being gay when we were short handed in the first place.

WWII was the same. Local draft boards were more inclined to draft single men than married ones, and who was more likely to be single back then, a gay man or a straight one. D'oh!

One of my fellow graduates at the Air Force Academy is gay. He served honorable as a pilot during the Vietnam era just as I did. No one cared much about it back then. A soldier is a soldier is a soldier, not a gay soldier or a straight soldier, just a soldier, someone who is willing to fight and die when called upon for the benefit of our country and its citizen, all our citizens not just some.

As far as Rosen's comment about "a warrior disposition" is concerned, he misses the purpose of having a military in this country. At a recent welcoming lecture for new recruits at Ft Benning, GA, the Lt. Gen. explained that if anyone joined the military so they could go out a kill people, then they were in the wrong profession. He noted that the primary role of the military was to back up our diplomatic and other efforts to resolve international disputes successfully in a peaceful way.

A military response was to be the resort only if all other efforts failed to ensure our national security. More than any other group in our country, members of the military should abhor war the most since it is they or their comrades who would die if war broke out. "A warrior disposition" is the last thing we need in our military.

Excellent comment, Bill
That sums the primary problem with Rosen's argument up very nicely.
