Healthcare Reform slight of hand

by: Song

I've generally not done much on the HCR bill up til this point because I've been hoping that the United States Senate would follow through with their promises to provide affordable insurance to all.  I am all for adding some more folk to insurance, its batting about .500 right now.  The problem of course is the affordable part.

Song :: Healthcare Reform slight of hand
A pretty good article that highlights something about the industry we are dealing with, the health insurance industry.

But this celebration is premature and over-hyped. The insurance companies are still in charge. In fact, they have 31 million new customers handed to them by the government. The issue of costs has simply not been addressed. As things stand now, there is absolutely nothing that can stop insurance companies from raising your premiums tomorrow. And they will, at some point. That's a guarantee.

I think that the danger we dems are in for is a "Mission Accomplished" moment.  Yeah, we passed something called Health Care Reform.  Whoopty crap.  I'm starting to believe that this is some sort of pyrrhic victory.  We got something passed that just requires everyone to get care, without doing anything to regulate the rates, or provide competition or anything really.  Sure, with a pre-existing condition I can now get insurance, it may end up costing me $3500 a month, but they can't deny me.  They can just make it ridiculous to buy.  Now that they are required to cover everyone, the Insurance companies can now use this as an excuse to raise rates across the board.  Thanks Washington, its now available, just not affordable.

Next time we do something historic, how about we quit with the fake drama and actually write a bill that does what it says it will do.

Great points
Moreover, even for the fraction of people with pre-existing conditions who actually might be able to afford the criminally-jacked-up premiums, co-pays and deductibles allowed under this "reform," they still have no guarantee that the profit-gouging insurance companies will actually pay their medical claims as agreed!

The caution about this becoming a "Mission Accomplished" moment is profoundly insightful.

That's why I wonder
if there is some strategy to get the Republicans to sue to get the mandatory coverage overturned. Meanwhile the Repubs are wasting tax money to do it.

There's gotta be a catch.

Pre-existing conditions
People under 18 will see the pre-existing conditions refusal ended in 6 months.

People over 18 will see the same thing in 2014, along with most other features.  But from now until then, you're still out of luck.

But even then
the "reform" has woefully inadequate provisions for helping people afford the insurance that the insurance cartel will be mandated to "offer" them.  There's essentially no meaningful control on what people, especially those with pre-existing conditions, can be charged for "coverage."  It's like declaring that homeless people have a "right" to buy a house and then declaring "mission accomplished" on the homelessness problem.

actually ...
Not just that the homeless have a "right" to buy a home at whatever price the seller feels like charging, but if the the homeless person doesn't buy the house for that price, he's deemed a criminal and is forced to pay a fine for vagrancy, but still doesn't have a home and now is even poorer than he was before.

this is one of the smartest posts
I've read on this issue.  Yes we passed a few good things, but there are a lot of concerns about what wasn't in there.

I know there has been a lot of debate on this site and others about the public option -- I really think that the PO would have helped fix some of these holes in the new system.

Again, great post.  Hope you keep writing on here.

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too
