Dems on Taxes: Fail

by: WeatherDem

Fri Sep 24, 2010 at 11:06:29 AM MST

I think Democrats have put the finishing touches on two years' of sub-par policy development and political failure with their refusal to vote on ending the Bush tax giveaways to the rich while maintaining the middle-class tax cuts.  This issue was as clear cut as we will likely ever see on any issue: extending the middle-class tax cuts and ending the rich's tax giveaways has clear, overwhelming support from Democrats, Unaffiliateds and Republicans alike.  Numerous advocacy groups and political organizations did extensive polling on the subject and they all came back with the same answer.  And yet, the House and Senate have decided to paralyze themselves (again) regarding which chamber should take up the issue first, etc., etc., etc.  They continue to concern themselves with the tiniest of details that should be easily handled and about which voters simply do not care.
WeatherDem :: Dems on Taxes: Fail
I viewed this as the last chance prior to the 2010 mid-term elections for Democrats to stand behind a policy that resonates strongly with people, including their base.  We keep hearing how the Democratic base has to come out and vote this November, or else incredibly terrible things will happen.

Up until now, enough of the base has projected their displeasure that 2008 campaign promises meant less than the wishes of corporations continuing to earn record profits that even Dem strategists and pundits noticed.

Here's the crux as I see it.  People have a hard time mustering emotion to avoid an abstract, potential threat sometime down the road.  The best example I can come up with is global warming.  I think we can all agree that more action would be taken if bad, global warming related things were happening today to Americans.  People have a much easier time planning their actions based on past events.

If Democrats wanted their base to show up this year, they have to do better than punting on the tax issue again and again.  They could have spent any or all of the past 20 months explaining why the rich's tax giveaways had to come to an end.  Instead, they spent almost no time on the issue and are now, once again, running away from the Cons who have understood the importance of framing for decades.

I doubt this highly visible act of political cowardice will go unnoticed by the Democratic base.  It helps to cement in peoples' minds the lack of Democratic leadership and moral integrity to act on today's pressing issues.  The base won't cheerlead this decision.

I will be supporting my state candidates
but I'm not so sure I'll be voting for Senate. Michael Bennet has repeatedly shown himself to be a coward. We need leaders who will at least say logical things that reveal that have a minimal grasp on important issues. If the US does not institute some sort of progressive income tax, we will have no shot at ever doing the the things we need to do to continue to have a middle class that innovates and thrives. Shame on the Senate for chickening out on this.

I've had a hard time squaring this circle of logic
Why the heck would you not push this issue hard now and every day until the election?  It's 31 flavors of win wrapped up in a victory basket for endangered Dems.

Ruling out flat out incompetence (just for the sake of argument), the only things I can figure is that either Dems are scared witless of the word "taxes" completely, or their deep donors have signaled that all the BUsh tax cuts are to be made permanent and therefore they are saving the fail for after the election.  So it's Team Spineless or Team Craven then?  I can't imagine why this enthusiasm gap exists for members of the left.

To hell with them.  If I had an enthusiasm gap before, it's an enthusiasm abyss now.  Bennet better pray the moderate Republicans cross the fences and vote for him over batcrack crazy Ken Buck, because he's lost my vote.  Local issues will get a vote, state issues are fine, but Senate and House?  Forget it, I'm writing in Mickey Mouse - he can't be any worse at legislation than these clowns.

Bennet is on record opposing the tax cuts to the rich
http://www.samefacts.com/2010/... thinks that the reason they punted was that going for a vote and losing because of the blue dogs (and DINO Senators) would be worse.

Well, we are going to have a lot fewer blue dogs to kick around next Congress.

Glad to hear it
Bennet going on record, that is.  Of course, a vote on the issue would be the most concrete example of exactly where he and others stand.

Ridding the Congress of a few Blue Dogs and CorporateDems sounds good.  I can't wait to hear the preemptive capitulators tell us for two years that the Blue Dogs' weren't far enough to the right, that when more Blue Dogs are elected, they'll work even harder to appease the fringe right-wing.  Good riddance to fake majorities.

Donor Anxiety
Polling shows very high support for re-instating higher taxes on the wealthy. The only reason Democratic candidates would oppose this is if donors matter more than voters.

QED.

Very good point
Let's see how many voters the donors bring with them to the polls.
