On Friday, I was proud to cast a vote for legislation that will benefit our economy, our environment and our children.
The American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) will help our businesses continue to be at the forefront of our new energy economy, lessen our dependence on foreign oil and protect and preserve our environment--all at the same time.
You and I know this was the right vote for Colorado but some on the other side of the aisle want to use this vote against me.
The day after I cast this vote, a head of the state Republican Party, Dick Wadhams was quoted in the Denver Post saying that this vote would cost me my seat.
Well, I've got news for him--I am proud of my vote and will continue to do what it takes to help Colorado continue to be a national leader in our new energy economy.
The Fourth Congressional District in particular stands at the forefront of business development in clean energy. Wind and solar companies are bringing jobs to Northern and Eastern Colorado and our research institutions are providing the human capital to get those jobs done.
Those who cling to the status quo want to use this vote against me, but I know this district far better than the political operatives who are committed to attacking me. I'm not worried, but I do believe it's time to send a message to those trying to derail the important work we're doing in Congress by making empty political threats.
This is exactly the kind of response and reasoning I expected to hear from Colorado's Democratic Congresspersons - regardless of their particular district.
Rep. Markey obviously understands that our environment and way of life is at clear risk of being destroyed if we don't do something today.
Rep. Markey understands that real economic benefit can be realized in her district as a result of clean energy research, development and deployment. Her constituents' will be more likely to be able to achieve happiness and prosper as a result of more opportunities being opened to them - not less, as the Cons claim.
It sounds to me like Rep. Markey is going to do what's necessary with regard to this legislation: inform her constituents why she believes it is necessary for them and this country. She isn't quaking in fear from the name-calling and baseless attacks that Dick Wadhams and others have and will continue to throw at her.
It is impressive that she used the word 'proud' to describe her decision and action on this bill. This state could use more 'proud' Democrats in Congress. Thank you, Rep. Markey, for your foresight and courage!
The email included an ask for donations to her re-election campaign. I've already donated $20 as a result of her vote on this bill. I encourage SquareStaters, your friends and families, to throw a little bit of money her way. The 2nd quarter fundraising deadline is tomorrow!
Betsy Markey for Congress
[Update 7/7/09]: Politico wrote an article about Tom Perriello (D-VA). Just like Rep. Markey, Tom voted for ACESA and presented a robust defense of that vote. Two juicy quotes:
The Republicans may win some seats because of this vote, but they can't regain their souls for demagoguing the issue," Perriello said.
"People are sick of cowardice," Perriello said. "It's not the easy votes, it's the hard votes."
Don't tell me that being a proud progressive won't play in what are supposed to be conservative strongholds. Markey, Perriello and others are making the hard votes - making sure their constituents long- and short-term interests are being represented. Cowards like Rep. Salazar have only their own short-term interests in mind.
