Bennet loans campaign $300,000

by: StrykerK2

Mon Aug 02, 2010 at 09:53:15 AM MST

(when Romanoff loaned his campaign $300 K, Bennet supporters said it was a publicity stunt - and now? - promoted by wade norris)

Michael Bennet loans his campaign $300,000.

Frankly it's a bizarre move for the campaign that has touted it's fundraising as a reason to vote for him (Bennet supporters are quick to say that Bennet is the only one who can raise the money needed to win).

CBS affiliate channel 4 has a quick bit about it on their webpage, but I'm assuming this will be a topic of more conversation to come.

This of course comes a day after a new poll shows Romanoff has taken a narrow lead in the race.

Let's be frank here: whether or not you approve of how Bennet made his millions, he can afford to do this.

The bigger question is why he's doing this.  Has his fundraising dried up so much he can't afford the final push (8 days to go right)?  Or is this a publicity stunt to show dedication (Remember, of course -- Romanoff sold his house to give his campaign warchest a boost for the closing days).

Either way, this isn't a good sign for the Bennet campaign.  What exactly did they do with the 6 million he had?  Was that ugly school bus really that expensive?

And finally...after spending 6 million, he's dragging behind an opponent who has spent less than 2?

Poll
Why did Bennet do this?
Nearly out of money
Trying to get free media attention
Actually rich enough he didn't notice the 300K
Anschutz check never came through. No other choice

Taking bets
Will the Denver Post characterize this "a desperate move" on Bennet's part?  That's how Michael Booth's article characterized Romanoff's decision to sell his house and loan his campaign a very similar sum of money.

How much you wanna bet the Post will characterize this as Bennet demonstrating heroic "reserve" or "determination" or some such thing?  And the characterization will be attributed to mysterious unnamed "political observers" who "are saying" these things.

typo fix: heroic "resolve" n/t

A Bennet spokesman said this shows he was willing to
match Romanoff? Weird.

It's not matching
That is like saying that making people who may 5 million dollars a year paying 5,000 dollars in taxes has the same affect on someone who makes 15,000 dollars a year having to pay the same amount.

(Alright, maybe not exactly the same ratios but I'm trying to make a point)

Romanoff can only afford one house, it is now gone, he gave up the biggest financial asset he had to put towards his campaign. That shows dedication.

Bennet just had 300 grand to loan himself? Did he sell his cars? His house? Or maybe Stryker had it right, just that ugly green bus? I've got my fingers crossed for that one personally. No he didn't. He can afford to not have 300 grand at his disposal right now, that is a huge difference.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.
