Congresswoman Diana DeGette has long been indebted to Congressman John Dingell for helping her leapfrog a number of others when he tapped her for the Energy and Commerce committee. She speaks highly of him as she tells the story in her book.

Add her loyalty to Dingell (and the fact that the seniority system is now weighted well in her favor) onto her belief that the Chairman was very good at his job, and she had a number of good reasons to do it when she took to the floor this week to try to fend of a leadership challenge from Henry Waxman.

Now personally, I am much more excited about having Waxman leading the charge in energy policy, but for DeGette the win puts her once again in the uncomfortable position she was in when her candidate, Hillary Clinton, lost in the primary. Once again, Rep. DeGette has been forced to demonstrate her gracefulness in a loss, set the political battles aside, and continue to move policy forward in a productive way.

Are you listening Musgrave? You could learn something...

Dianna DeGette (D - Denver)

"The winds of change have blown through Congress today. I congratulate Chairman Waxman on his selection as Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. I have worked closely with him on issues including the environment and consumer protection and look forward to serving with him to move our nation's agenda forward. I also pledge to do everything I can to heal any rifts in the Committee and the Democratic Caucus."

"Though Congressman John Dingell, D-Mich., lost his chairmanship of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, he did garner the vote of Congressman John Salazar, D-Colo."

Why are you more excited about Waxman? (0.00 / 0)
just curious.

Few are as conservative on commerce and energy as Dingell.  Many saw him as completely in the pocket of the automakers.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're not wrong (0.00 / 0)
Dingell has been in the auto's back pocket for the 28 years he was the lead Dem on the Commerce/Energy Committee. Perhaps it was the millions of dollars worth of stock he and his wife own or his wife working for GM that led to that impression.  ;)

Dingell stood by the autos side as they dragged themselves out of the U.S. market lead they once held.  He hasn't been a friend to enforcing environmental regulations, either.

Waxman on the other hand is incredibly progressive on these issues.  He has made a career out of going after corporate and governmental malfeasance, to boot.

At a time when taking action on climate change is so critical, Dingell would have cost us valuable time.  I expect Waxman to actively pursue bold solutions.

I'm glad to see DeGette act so professionally.

He's not conservative (0.00 / 0)
He's an old-school liberal, in fact. But he has been a major road block for CAFE standards for many many years. He has been an enabler for the big 3 when some tough love several years ago might have saved them some of the recent trouble.

Ditto (0.00 / 0)
The people here got it just right. I like Dingell on many issues, and I think he has been as good or better than anyone in that building, but he is the Senator from GM, and I don't think that will best serve our country's interests in the immediate future.
