| Congresswoman Diana DeGette has long been indebted to Congressman John Dingell for helping her leapfrog a number of others when he tapped her for the Energy and Commerce committee. She speaks highly of him as she tells the story in her book.
Add her loyalty to Dingell (and the fact that the seniority system is now weighted well in her favor) onto her belief that the Chairman was very good at his job, and she had a number of good reasons to do it when she took to the floor this week to try to fend of a leadership challenge from Henry Waxman.
Now personally, I am much more excited about having Waxman leading the charge in energy policy, but for DeGette the win puts her once again in the uncomfortable position she was in when her candidate, Hillary Clinton, lost in the primary. Once again, Rep. DeGette has been forced to demonstrate her gracefulness in a loss, set the political battles aside, and continue to move policy forward in a productive way.

Dianna DeGette (D - Denver)
"The winds of change have blown through Congress today. I congratulate Chairman Waxman on his selection as Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. I have worked closely with him on issues including the environment and consumer protection and look forward to serving with him to move our nation's agenda forward. I also pledge to do everything I can to heal any rifts in the Committee and the Democratic Caucus." |
