The AP recently called it that Anchorage mayor Mark Begich will win the Alaska Senate race over 7 time convicted, "series of tubes" Stevens.

The vote count:

The current vote count: Begich 150,728 votes, Stevens 147,004 votes. Begich's lead of 3,724 votes is greater than the roughly 2,500 outstanding ballots. By percentage, the 1.18% lead is beyond the 0.5% threshold that would have entitled Stevens to a state-funded recount.

So that leaves the recount in Minnesota and the runoff race in Georgia.  In a conference call today, Howard Dean talked about how all the Obama offices in Georgia remain open to now focus their efforts.  The DNC is also helping with pouring in the money.

johne :: We won't have Ted 'Series of Tubes' Stevens to kick around anymore

I heard on the Beebs (0.00 / 0)
that Stevens can still contest it.

Any word on whether or not he will?

not likely (0.00 / 0)
but we are talking about one old and cranky son of a bitch.  Several articles I saw mentioned that with this kind of lead it's very unlikely a recount could turn up enough votes to make up for that kind of lead.  Also, the remaining ballots yet to count will probably add a little more to Begich's lead.

revolution from within

BTW (0.00 / 0)
That is the most irritating rambling I have ever heard from an old man.

And that he is trying to regulate the internet in the interest of regulating commerce and the evils of profit, is particularly mind-blowing.

but i dunno (0.00 / 0)
i suffer through it again and its difficult for me to discern if he is talking about profit.

SPIT IT OUT, OLD MAN!

full disclosure: I heart old people, just not this guy

What's Lieberman (4.00 / 2)
doing to make sure Martin and Franken win?  Oh, that's right: nothing.  He's hamming for media attention for himself instead.

A Responsible Plan for Iraq: endorsed by Jared Polis

This is also Goodnight Palin (3.67 / 3)
This also deep-sixes Palin's hope of entering into national politics this term.  She was hoping Ted would get back in, get kicked out and that she would run for the seat in a special election next year (which she would have easily won), thereby addressing everyone's (well, every intelligent one's) concern that she didn't know what the hell she was talking about when asked about any topic besides moose, guns and beauty pagents.

Poor Sara is stuck where she is for the time being.

Newt (0.00 / 0)
Let Newt, Sara, and Huckleberry have the new regional Republican party.

Let old Ted go quietly into the night.

Let the "Look Back in Anger" Republican Party listen to their pundits and advisers about how to continue to adhere to "conservative" values and how John McCain failed to run on those values.

To paraphrase Kos- the reality based community will pass them by as the Republican Party is consigned to the ash bin of political parties like the Whigs or Federalist parties.

In a way I feel sorry for Stevens. (0.00 / 0)
He's in his mid-80s, he's been turned out of the Senate, and he may be facing felony jail time. Uncle Ted is certainly the author of his own misfortune, but it must hurt like hell to be him. So I'm rating him 51% Greek tragic and 49% asshole.

There is no elite, so take your place in the driver's seat.

Re: In a way I feel sorry for Stevens. (0.00 / 0)
I sorta feel sorry for him.  Part of me wants the lame-duck Senate to expel him still, but aww heck, I guess leave the old man alone.  No need to kick him while he's down.  Otherwise, though, I am sick of these corrupt SOB's polluting good governance.  Good riddance!

uuhhh... fuck Ted Stevens (0.00 / 0)

Alaska (0.00 / 0)
Awww Alaska has come around.  This solid GOP state that hasn't sent a Democrat to Washington since of all people, Mike Gravel, isn't so bad after all.
