According to the Rocky Mountain News [h/t ProgressNow's Daily Digest], seven people have applied to be Colorado's next Secretary of State.

The applicants:

* Former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.
* State Rep. Bernie Buescher.
* Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon.
* Rosemary Rodriguez, chairwoman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
* Gilpin County Clerk Jessica Lovingier.
* TV show host Aaron Harber.
* Dan Willis, secretary for the Democratic Party in Denver.

We should know by the end of the year who will replace Mike Coffman.

Admittedly, I don't even know who Jessica Lovingier or Aaron Harber are yet.  I'll go consult The Google.

Gordon (4.00 / 4)
Gordon ran for and almost won this position two years ago (and probably would have if not for Denver's vote fiasco that made it so hard for so many to vote). I truly hope he's the choice.

I'm a little bit disappointed (0.00 / 0)
in his misunderstanding of checkboxgate.  Sure his bill that lead to the problem was well written, but the SOS's interpretation of the law and how he created the form was the problems.

revolution from within

Ken - got to know him in 2006 (4.00 / 1)
(ask him about climbing to Barr Camp sometime) and respect his intellect, his integrity amd his passion for fair elections

I was hoping Joan Fitz-Gerald would apply (0.00 / 0)
She was the most qualified person when the rumors were flying.

They're all great applicants. It's nice to have to pick the best person from a field of All-Stars. My guess is it will be either Buescher or Romanoff.

I heard... (4.00 / 1)
and this was from someone in a close circle of her political allies, that Joan's completely burnt out from the primary.

Gordon. (4.00 / 3)
But I think it'll be Romanoff. The powers that be see him as a rising star.

There is no elite, so take your place in the driver's seat.

Romanoff (4.00 / 3)
A skilled and thoughtful policy maker. An effective communicator. Great political skills. Andrew Romanoff is a critical reason why Democrats successfully seized the standard of good governance in Colorado, leaving Republicans to cut their nose off to spite their face.

Definitely a person who will strengthen an office battered by its last two GOP holders, and the person who can effectively connect with the public to sell policy, and has the political skills to make sure Democrats hold the seat in 2010.

All three of those factors have to be weighed in this decision. Romanoff is the one who brings all of those things to the table prima facie.

I'd love to see Romanoff (0.00 / 0)
... challenge Salazar in 2010!

It'll never happen (0.00 / 0)
But Ken getting the Interior Dept. would've given Andrew the fast track for the Senate, had he not applied for this position.

He'll be a very strong SecState though, and Ritter should most definitely pick him (with Bernie as a backup).

There are actually 20 applicants in total (4.00 / 1)
Including failed Cong candidate Jay Fawcett from CD 5 and several attorneys, Dem and GOP alike.

Do you have a link detailing who they are?

Romanoff or Gordon (4.00 / 1)
Each brings unique leadership talent to an office badly in need of it.  There is no doubt that Ken would have been our SOS had so many of Denver's voters been able to cast their ballots in 2006. Andrew is simply one of the most effective and exciting political persons in the state and has demonstrated his very strong leadership.  We would be given excellent service by either. It is a shame that one will not be in office after the selection.
