More insanity in Colorado - this time the Senate race

by: wade norris

Tue Jul 27, 2010 at 15:28:57 PM MST

Lately in Colorado, the Republicans have pretty much gone crazy - with
Tom "bomb Mecca" Tancredo  launching an independent bid in the Governor's race and Republican Senate candidates Ken Buck and Jane Norton having a standoff about wearing high heel shoes.
I was hoping that we were going to stay civil on the Democratic side of the aisle, but in the Senate primary, Michael Bennet's campaign and his supporters are trying their level best at matching the Republicans' insanity with their tactics against Andrew Romanoff.
wade norris :: More insanity in Colorado - this time the Senate race
This week, Andrew Romanoff made the bold move to go 'All In' on the race and sold his house to fund ads for the last 2 weeks - a move that will add an additional $325,000 to the nearly $700,000 raised in the last quarter - all by small dollar donations.

"I'd like to create a democracy where you don't have to sell your house to win the U.S. Senate, but we're not there yet," he said. "I expect to win and repay the loan. I happen to believe Americans of modest means deserve representation, too."

Whether you agree with Mr. Romanoff's decision to sell his house or not, Mr. Romanoff is showing the volunteers and supporters across our state that he intends to fight to win this race and prove that the country can elect Senators exactly in the same way Barack Obama was elected.

But the Bennet supporters are hurling all kinds of insults and unfounded accusations towards Mr. Romanoff.

One Bennet supporter wrote this diary Romanoff and the balloon boy
which said this about Mr. Romanoff:

He is so sincere about it(not taking PAC money), he is apparently willing to become homeless for the cause.
Homelessness is a serious societal problem, causing immeasurable pain to it's victims.

yes, the author is stating here that Romanoff is using Homelessness as a campaign gimmick.

Another blogger - in that diary, goes so far as to accuse Andrew Romanoff of lying about his public service as a teacher in Central America -  read it yourself

"I'm also still looking for what year he claims to have taught English
in Nicaragua. I think he made it up. I was illegal to do business from 1982 to 1990.
Was he there as a guest of Daniel Ortega or the Contras?"

So Mr. Romanoff - not only made up teaching in rural schools in Central America and Nicaragua, if he did, he was working with the Contras!
(and this guy said the same on his facebook page)
And it is not just supporters, the Bennet campaign is also doing the same: by sending their spokes person to crash the Romanoff Press conference at campaign Headquarters: As the Huffington Post calls it -

"Rockies Gone Wild: Colorado Politics Devolves Into All-Out War"

Mr. Romanoff's campaign and his supporters have done their best to keep this civil.
I fully disclose that I have gone on the offensive on the facts on Mr. Bennet, such as his ties to  Right wing Multi Billionaire Republican Phillip Anschutz, and that I have been upset about Senator Bennet's conservadem votes:
Votes like Senator Bennet's vote against Cramdown,  or how he voted against the bill to Break up the Big Banks and how Senator Bennet joined with Republicans to vote against the Sanders amendment which would have closed a 35 billion tax loophole for Big Oil.
I have even interviewed people who knew him professionally -  such as the Teachers who worked under him after he was appointed to be the superintendent of Denver Public Schools and did not appreciate how teachers were treated.
But I have not accused Mr. Bennet of lying about his career or using homelessness as a gimmick.

I believe that Mr. Bennet's appointment and candidacy represents the calculation that Democrats must be in bed with corporations just as much as Republicans to win - even if those corporate interests are fully Republican themselves.
Someone has to take the stand and follow President Obama's lead to stop the corporate buyout of our elections.
That can start here with the people funded Andrew Romanoff campaign.

I'm one of many volunteers for Romanoff.  I don't have a lot of money, but I've spent a lot of time volunteering to help elect a man with progressive ideals and a vision of cleaning up Washington.
Andrew Romanoff is all in.  So are all of his volunteers. There are 14 days to go, and he needs our help.
Donate to his campaign and help us prove that the people are more important than the corporations.

Seriously...
It's time to let it go Wade. There are other things worse than taking PACs, like bribery for instance. Romanoff needs more than our help.  He needs a long vacation from politics - and he can take Andrea Merida with him.

Yes...
I feel like a trip to D.C. is in our future for sure.

How's that conflict of interest thing workin' out for ya?
Just saying.

[ Parent ]
Just fine, thanks.
My voters know me, and I'm getting a barrage of calls of support.

[ Parent ]
Will that be paid for...
...by Andrew Romanoff, as well? Don't forget to disclose.

[ Parent ]
Oh, silly Anita
Andrew's trip to D.C. to take over the Senate office is paid for by the taxpayers.  Didn't you know that?

You're still mad that I don't think charters are a panacea, is all.

More like - concerned...
...that a School Board Member who chooses to spend more time supporting a political candidate, rather than supporting and qualifying opportunities to help kids in her Distict, might not be the most objective voice as a DPS School Board Member. Call me silly, again, but how does crossing the line of ethics help educate kids?

Andrea, there are no magic pills, just people working together with cooperation and creativity to find ways to help our kids achieve academically - despite the "one size fits some" prejudices among a few misinformed school board members. I don't dismiss your passion, just the fact that most of it is misplaced, and loaded with a lot of misinformation. You could have spent more time researching opportunities for kids, instead of promoting a candidate and your political ideology. You crossed the line - and apparently - still having a difficult time coming to terms with your conflicts of interest. Best wishes.

All due respect
I have done lots and lots of studying to get to this opinion.  You and just happen to arrive at different conclusions.  There's nothing wrong with that.  The problem with many, many folks on your side is that there is no room for dialog.  We see this in Denver all the time.  Thus far you have presented yourself to be of that ilk with your intolerance.  It's too bad, because you're quite thoughtful about education.

As an aside, I will let you know that school is out right now.  The board doesn't meet over the summer.  Since November I have visited an average of three schools per week and at least talk on the phone with constituents and others once a day at a minimum.  I have been to schools in my district that have NEVER had a board member visit, and not just a few.  I am known for working very hard, and it's insulting that someone that lives in in the hills would presume to know my work.  You don't.

As another aside, did you know that I have pushed DPS to acquire a property and earmark it for a charter school 6-12 program?  Why?  Because we have a charter in the district that needs elbow room for their small-school model.  This isn't about my philosophy.  It's about getting kids to graduate, and if that means I have to find a place for them to stretch out and do that, then I will.

Ms. Anita, you don't know me...not even the first thing.

"There are 14 days to go"

If we can all hold it together for that long and come together at the end of it.  I certainly hope that but for a few exceptions, we will all come together for our party's candidate.

I would apologize for the slip I had earlier about Andrea this week but that post is gone now.  I regretted re-joining both sides in the back and forth snarkiness.

That's the spirit, Jeffco

I Agree
Regardless the nominated candidate, we will have to bring our energy to support him.   If not, we can kiss the seat goodbye, and very likely the governor's mansion as well.

No harm, no foul, JD
Thank you.

For the record, I'm a huge fan of Andrea Merida.
She's a woman of excellent character, integrity, intelligence, compassion, and dedication.

Her rabid detractors are all worked up with their fangs out right now, drooling at the mouth, trying to turn a relatively minor disclosural faux pas into Watergate-meets-Teapot-Dome. But the reality is, it deserves to be no more than a fleeting blemish on the early record of this rising star of the Colorado progressive movement.

When you're passionate and stand tough on true progressive principles the way Andrea does, you make enemies -- and some of them are not nice people at all. That goes with the territory.

Hopefully, we'll be able to persuade Andrea to run for higher office in the not-too-distant future.

Agreed to an extent...
The Democrats will come together and support the primary winner, unequivocally. Further, to disagree that Andrea Merida is not all of the things you mentioned would be hypocritical. I admire her passion, courage, and tenacity. On this particular matter, she compromised those virtues with a choice that was a breach of public trust and unethical. As a parent of school age children her actions are unacceptable, and represent a clear conflict of our children's interests. She made a mistake - a mistake that requires a consequence. Leaving the Romanoff campaign was a slap in the face to her District's constituents. The message: "I care more about compromising my candidate's campaign than the public's trust." She's failing to accept responsibility for her actions, as a School Board Member, indicative of an elected official who is guided by misplaced priorities. Andrea Merida needs to resign as a DPS School Board Member. There a many other opportunities within the education community for a passionate progressive to get involved.

Whatever future political plans the Democrats have for Andrea Merida, I do extend my best. Andrea Merida's attributes clearly exceed her immediate liabilities. I have no doubts she will come to understand why her actions have sparked so much emotion, and rise stronger for the experience. Merida's choices - although tied to the primary - are a separate matter from Andrew Romanoff. Merida made an active decision to do the things she did - regardless of her good intentions. Excusing her infractions, based on being fans - and blaming her choices on enemies - is a clear sign our progressive leaders will continue politics as usual, overriding their good sensibilities on public policy. If progressive Democrats aren't willing to "lovingly" hold their own to the standard we exhaustively work toward, then we're no better than the opposition on matters of ethics.

Tell you what.
If you can point to any DPS BOE policies that I've broken that necessitate my resignation, I will seriously, SERIOUSLY mull it over.
