The Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act has passed the Senate.

That is the name of the bank bailout. Really. Constitutionally, tax bills have to originate in the House. So the Senate took a bill the House passed, gutted the text and 'amended' it to be the bailout bill. Voila! A bill that had been about mental health benefits is now about mortgages and wool. The wool thing is a whole other story.

Allard voted No. Salazar voted Yes.

Obama and McCain both voted Yes.

The bill passed 74-25 with Sen. Kennedy not voting due to health.

How Would Wellstone Vote?

Paul Wellstone (4.00 / 1)
is now rolling over in his grave.  I want to know how zombie Wellstone would vote.  Maybe he can bite some of these folks while he's at it.

srsly (0.00 / 0)
it is f'ing unconstitutional.  It's pathetic.

I think we need a tax strike.

well lets see here (4.00 / 3)
feingold and sanders voted against it.

So, well, that was the correct vote.

Why ever play by the rules?

The Shock Doctrine at Work (4.00 / 3)
The Clinton tax hike of 1992 reduced the deficit and freed capital for investment in US business.  This may remove investment capital, as Sirota says, for a generation.  Let's hope he's wrong and some how the country recovers, though I fear it won't.

the problem here (0.00 / 0)
is those that did the failing still have power!

That's not how capitalism is supposed to work.

Sen. Wellstone ... my hero ... (4.00 / 1)
I think he would have voted no and have been heartbroken. He would have done the right thing though. No doubt in my mind.

What are the issues with this bill?  In detail.  I'm sorry, but I only got general info.  No specifics.

If You Listen to Fools, the Mob Rules!!!!

Here's a copy of the "measure title" (4.00 / 1)
A bill to provide authority for the Federal Government to purchase and insure certain types of troubled assets for the purposes of providing stability to and preventing disruption in the economy and financial system and protecting taxpayers, to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide incentives for energy production and conservation, to extend certain expiring provisions, to provide individual income tax relief, and for other purposes.

Not sure if that makes it any clearer, but there it is.

Wool, huh? (4.00 / 1)
As in, "pulling the wool over our constituents' eyes"?  Fitting, I suppose.

Yeah, Wellstone would have voted no.  So would Kennedy if he had been well enough to vote.

Not thrilled with Salazar (0.00 / 0)
Ken voted for the Senate version.  That's consistent with his previous votes that hurt the middle class.

I'm not thrilled with Obama's vote, either.  He seems to have capitulated in the face of Republican fear-mongering, which sets a bad precedent if he's elected President.  I'm not expecting a populist, progressive President Obama by any stretch.

A Responsible Plan for Iraq: endorsed by Jared Polis

Who says... (0.00 / 0)
congress doesn't have a sense of humor?  The irony of amending this to an addiction bill is too perfect.

It's true that Sanders and Feingold voted against it.  But so did Allard.  Can it really be the correct vote?  Congress, once again, instead of standing up to the president, merely lard up the bills he wants with pork.  Pathetic.

I wonder how Udall will vote on the new version?  I wonder...
