Bennet's "Interngate" day 2

by: Firewalker

Fri Jul 09, 2010 at 14:35:33 PM MST

Yesterday I wrote a diary about an email that surfaced from the Bennet campaign about how people who wanted the Senator's ear could contribute specific sums of money to have more time with him.

It attracted attention on state and national blogs, but the story also got quite a bit of traffic around the state and the country.

Firewalker :: Bennet's "Interngate" day 2
In addition Michael Booth's piece in the Denver Post, The Washington Post ran a full article today, but was apparently unable to reach the former Bennet team member:

Jeffrey Garofano...didn't respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment.

What's interesting about that story is that apparently it was the Associated Press that was trying to contact him -- the story hit the wire nationwide.

CBS covered it, both locally (channel 4) and nationally

We shouldn't forget our friends up North, who covered it in the Coloradoan

Personally I liked Eli's coverage over at Fox31.

This is turning out not to be a small story, given the coverage it's getting.  With so many media outlets, both in Colorado and nationally, who have been covering it, I think we will be hearing more about this story.

The Bennet campaign did everything they could to downplay it, using words like "volunteer" and "unpaid" as often as they could.  Regardless, there are legitimate questions about whether anyone else at the campaign knew about this, or even if he was told to use his personal email in the event these activities came to light.

Love the TV graphic
of Bennet with a pile of cash. Nice touch.

Did Romanoff dump Debbie Fischer?

She simply attacked me in a FaceBook blog(saved for future reference) claiming that I was full of it when I politely pointed out to Vincent Rosseau that AR could not have practiced law for the Southern Poverty Law Center as he had no license.Did she chime in to Vincent and say Ray's right? No, she said that I was out of it and to open a case with the legal disciplinary counsel.

The real reason that I've been angry at AR besides his tarnishig the image of the Southern Poverty Law Center (which I've been a member of for many years), and the smearing of my friend John Wren for asking why a Romanoff fundraising event was held the exact date tinme and location of a cancelled Democratic precinct meeting.

The most disturbing information on him  is that
he bares false witness. He's tryiing to mudsling his way to the nomination by smearing a very good, competent, and compassionate man. I happen to take the Torah seriously.

But let's examine his whole message.
1.He says look at my wonderful accomplishments as  legislator (conservative Democrat)while vilifying conservattive Democrats for passing conservative bills. 2.He claims to be an immigration reform advocate when he wrote one of the harshest laws on the books in the USA.He shows little knowledge of the situatioon in Mexico to state that economic development is the problem. It is not. Distribution of wealth and social violence which is driven by the US demand for illegal narcotics has started a civil war.
3. He claims to not take pac money when, if his tax returns are to believed, he must have lived of the stuff or he has a trust fund that he's not telling anyone about.
4. He has a problem telling the truth. He claims that he never called Michael Bennet "corrupt" in a long e-mail, while it is publicly documented by the Statesman that he said Michael Bennet sold votes for money.

5.He has  attacked the President repeatedly, and now puts out an e-mail trying to  show that he can say that "Yes, The President sucks, but not as bad as the ringht wing tin hats think.

It is no secret that the vast majority of African-American leaders back Michael Bennet. It is no secret why Congressman Ed Perlmuter backs Sen Bennet. It is no secret that people and groups that support justice for undocumented workers, back Sen Bennet.

Now tell me, which of these candidates has shown more honesty and integrity? I think the answer clearly resounds Sen Michael Bennet.

That's nice, Ray
Thanks for your input.

Has Bennet dumped you?
You are one of the rudest, nastiest posters on the blogs and you do it all on behalf of Bennet. You compared Romanoff supporters to the KKK on behalf of Michael Bennet. Has he called you out on it? He either hasn't or you don't have enough respect for him to listen to him.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.

In Defense of US Senator Michael Bennet, Day 2
First, criticising people personally is uncool. Let's not do it on either side, okay?

This is a non-story.

There are two different roles for Bennet right now. One is as US Senator, and one is as candidate for the US Senate. He keeps them very separate. He is meticulous about it, in fact.

Bennet has never required constituents to be donors to listen to them. I'm broke, relatively speaking, and so are most of my friends. My contributions have been pathetic for every candidate, every race. (Those who know me can look it up.) I support my candidates vocally, by blogging, and with GOTV.

Before I knew Bennet, my friends and I had lots of access to him, and there were numerous times we talked to him about health reform, immigration, and gay rights. He and his staff were AWESOME. AMAZING. RESPONSIVE. RESPECTFUL. ATTENTIVE. They listened. He was, and is, the most accessible and responsive federal legislator I have ever met, and I've met a lot.

That is the Senate side of Bennet.

On the campaign side, he should be trying to make some cash (as Andrew should be, as well). I don't know where the intern's numbers came from, and I have never heard them myself. As a Bennet supporter, I was able to host an event, and he came, and no one ever mentioned money. Of course there were some BRE's (business return envelopes), laying around, but I don't even think he did an "ask".

Like Andrew Romanoff, Bennet does have to choose larger fundraisers versus smaller ones, especially this close to the election. Unlike Andrew, Michael Bennet has children and a full-time job, so he only has one day a week to campaign. Would he choose a fundraiser on that one day that might potentially net lots of contributions over one that would not? Of course. Any candidate with a brain would do that.

I happen to know Andrew chooses bigger fundraisers over smaller ones, as well. I was sitting with some Romanoff supporter friends the other day at dinner. They were telling me about a campaign event they went to, and they were disappointed Andrew wasn't in attendance. They were told he had a bigger fundraiser to go to. I'm glad Andrew was smart enough to do that. If he ends up being our Democratic candidate, it's good to know he has a shred of campaign financial sense. I wish he had even more. (If he did, he'd take PAC money so we'd be competitive with the elephant party.)

The intern in this story was never hired by the Bennet staff, and received nothing in return. I am told he used his own friend's list and his own email account to try to stir up support for a candidate he personally supported -- much like people do everyday. The intern wrote what he wanted to write, and didn't get the facts straight.

Interns do this all the time. Those of us who have worked on campaigns know interns sometimes screw up, and need to be supervised closely. The kid made a mistake, and was let go. Again, happens all the time, in every election. I happen to know Andrew's deputy campaign manager (who told me this personally) has asked a number of rogue-volunteers to go, as well.

It is sad a young kid made a mistake that is getting so much press. StrykerK2 trashes Bennet for scapegoating the intern, but by blowing this out of proportion, isn't Team Romanoff hurting this kid many times more?  All Bennet did was remove him from his internship.

Let's stop the sensationalism and talk about what really matters -- policy.

I'd love to discuss policy monger
let's see...where to start...Cramdown?  Too big too fail? BP tax loopholes?

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

P.S.
Ray is not the official spokespers for Bennet anymore than Peter is for Romanoff.  We all have our own opinions, and it is tempting to fly off the handle. Let's try to be respectful with each other, please?  We're all on the same side of the left-right spectrum, and we will very soon need to work together.

I'm taking a screenshot
No one will believe this.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.

Because a supporter of one of the candidates gave a personal opinion...
about what might explain how this intern misinterpreted campaign information and completely screwed up?  Really, Oz. You find that worth a screenshot? Really.  Why?

I don't speak for Michael Bennet any more than I speak for you.

No
The screenshot was to have proof to tell people that you, of all people, were preaching respect over innocent mistakes made on a campaign.

No one would believe it considering how you have been one of the people going after Romanoff for every little thing, story or not. If I remember correctly, you harped on about Romanoff turning down a back room deal because you had the silly opinion it made him look bad. Just FYI, it never looks bad to turn down back room deals but it ALWAYS looks bad to have any  Senators staffer requesting donations for time with him.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.

You remember wrong.
"If I remember correctly, you harped on about Romanoff turning down a back room deal because you had the silly opinion it made him look bad."

That wasn't me. I have no idea what the Hell you are talking about. Nothing new.

Tell us all about Romanoff's backroom deal, please.

[ Parent ]
Seriously?
You don't remember Bennet asking the White House to take out a potential opponent and then the White House offering Romanoff what many consider a backroom deal that Romanoff then turned down?

See Romanoff has this tendency that while running as the anti-corruption candidate, he isn't corrupt. It's a shocking concept.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.

Unless Peter really is the official spokesperson for Romanoff?
Maybe he is. If that is the case, "Congratulations, Peter".
