(The views here are of the Monkey. What are yours? I can tell you Palin's. She says she is as "pro-life as any candidate can be." - promoted by Aaron Silverstein)

Oh, McCain SOOO wants to steal the spotlight. So we have a running mate. She's female! And young!

That's about where the political positives end, as far as I can tell.

She has 2 years of experience as governor, and we want her "a heartbeat away" from President? Compared to "unready to lead" Obama? Huh?

She has 5 kids, including a newborn w/ Downs. This isn't a negative at all, but does she want this job with so much going on in her family life?

She has an unresolved scandal going on, regarding firing her ex-brother-in-law for personal reasons (allegedly). Is this what "we're different!" McCain wants to prove to people that he's not like Bush's patronage-for-buddies machine?

There's the geography...Alaska? Really? Is that where McCain hopes to swing voters, for that ripe electoral college pool?

Finally this quote is golden, if sad:

As for the prospect of her being vice president, Palin told Kudlow that she could not answer the question of whether she wanted the job "until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day."

from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25...

I have to say I don't get it. Does anyone see/know something I don't?

I find it an odd choice, indeed (4.00 / 1)

might bring some entertainment value at least!

Do Clinton voters really have a choice? (4.00 / 1)
Only possibility of thought shows appeal to women. But will Clinton voters trust McCain to appoint liberal pro choice judges when Ginsburg and Stephens retire?

A 6-3 majority will destroy womens' rights.

No, they won't (0.00 / 0)
By picking a solidly "pro-(prebirth)-life" candidate he's thumbing his nose at women, while simultaneously pandering desperately for their votes.

That's my point exactly (0.00 / 0)
Voters in favor of women's rights MUST vote Obama.

My thoughts on Palin (4.00 / 2)
This will do nothing to help McCain besides shore up the Alaska Vote and provide a peg for the drill now-save money myth.

The people will see she was selected based on gender as the top factor.  She seems smart, sincere and attractive, but that will not be enough to stop the perfect storm headed towards D.C.

I hope so. (0.00 / 0)
This could seriouly backfire on McCain, if Joe Q. Public sees it as a desperate grab at the female "He's not Hillary!" vote.

Palin is (0.00 / 0)
an extreme right-winger.  Palin is corrupt.  Palin is perfect for the Republican Vice-President slot!

local comment from two older women (4.00 / 1)
1) My mother-in-law, who is a rabid Hillary hater and has said she can't see voting for that "young and inexperienced man" gushed all about Palin when we called her this morning.  My husband couldn't get a word in edgewise.

2) An activist friend who was a strong Hillary supporter during the primaries told us "if the GOP thinks Palin in any way compares to Hillary, that's an insult!"

reaction from the right (4.00 / 1)
There is a diary on Dkos regarding some of the right wing reaction. The best quote I saw was this from Townhall's Ron Fournier:

If Obama is an empty suit, as McCain has suggested, is Palin suited for the Oval Office herself?

She is younger and less experienced than the first-term Illinois senator, and brings an ethical shadow to the ticket. Just 20 months ago, she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, a town of 6,500 where the biggest issue is controlling growth and the biggest annual worry is whether there will be enough snow for the Iditarod dog-mushing race.

Paul Begala: (0.00 / 0)
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITI...
For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

Just watched the MSNBC (0.00 / 0)
video of her presentation to the public.

First -- watch McCain while she talks. Horrible -- twitches like a toddler, trying to clap where he should and turn on the pearly-yellows at the right time.  Really looks like he's not competent.

Second -- she is a really bad speaker.  She doesn't support from the diaphragm so her voice is thin, she doesn't end her statements on an up-lift, and sounds remarkably like Peggy Hill.

McCain/Palin: Because all cats are gray in the dark

Environmental Record (4.00 / 1)
This is from a statement just released by Rodger Schlickeisen, President of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund:

"Senator McCain's choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

"Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska's coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming.

Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration."
