These are just two of the images on Bob Schaffer's son's  facebook page. The original page is archived.  Plenty of coverage on this over here and in the DenverRockyMountainPost.  With the racist attacks on Barack Obama coming from the likes of Fox News, this is having a lot of impact here in the squarestate.  Rep Rosemary Marshall is, uhm, a bit perturbed too.  Also interesting is that Wadhams felt the only response necessary from the campaign is to put it all on college aged Justin with dad saying he's going to punish him.

Denver - State Representative Rosemary Marshall Colorado called on Bob Schaffer to immediately condemn the racist material on his son's personal Internet site.  These images include a picture of the pyramids with a caption "SLAVERY GETS SHIT DONE" as well as an image of Jesus Christ holding an assault rifle in front of the Confederate battle flag, a symbol often used by the KKK and other racist and anti-Semitic groups.

"Schaffer needs to take responsibility and immediately condemn the racist images on his son's Internet page," stated state Rep. Rosemary Marshall, a long-time leader of Denver's African American community.

Bob Schaffer declined to comment when asked by the Denver Post. (DP, 8/5/2008)

Schaffer declined to comment?  Wouldn't the response be something along the lines of, that's not how I raised my children?

More from the press release:

"It's enlightening to see some of the values Bob Shaffer, who runs as a "family values" man, has instilled in his own son: racism, homophobia, and a militant inversion of Christianity," said Allan Burns a businessman in Colorado Springs.

Schaffer has used his son in his first campaign commercial and on his campaign website.

"Schaffer is a coward to use his son for his campaign commercials but then point the finger rather at him for failing to follow his "values", stated Marshall.

Bob Schaffer's personal Facebook Internet page directly linked to his son's which included the racist images until the after the blogs and media begin asking questions late yesterday.

As the press release alleges, Justin's page was friends with dad's.  That means dad approved the request either without looking at son Justin's page or didn't care what was on it.  Since the actual Justin Schaffer page is now deleted we can no longer confirm that, but the son was a fan of the candidate page.  What's that about the acorn not falling far from the tree? [corrected fan page details]

A bit about neo-confederates and the meaning behind the confederate flag below the fold.

johne :: Slavery gets sh*t done? - updated
Interesting reading over at the Southern Poverty Law Center regarding the confederate flag:
You can see that in the fight over the Confederate flag, where the neo-Confederates say, "This is heritage, not hate. It has nothing to do with race at all." At the same time they're essentially defending white supremacy, they deny race has anything to do with it.

IR: So you see these neo-Confederates, the leaders and thinkers of groups like the League of the South (LOS), as basically white supremacist?

Simpson: They certainly want the revival of the principles of the Confederacy, and one those principles would in fact be white supremacy, unquestioned and explicit. The racism that's woven into their comments is often quite astonishing.

IR: What actually was the Confederate view of slavery?

Simpson: Confederates during the Civil War had no problem whatsoever in associating their cause with the protection of slavery and a system of white supremacy which they thought was inherent in the Confederate world order. The Confederates of 1861-65 were much more honest about the importance of slavery than are the neo-Confederates of today.

Oy. (4.00 / 3)
I have mixed feelings about this. During the Perlmutter campaign we changed the girls' Myspace pages to "friends only" as a way to protect against just this type of thing. Not that they had offensive content, but we were aware that anything they posted could become fodder for attacks on their dad. Then there was the incident with one of their Facebook pages where a right-wing attack site got ahold of screen shots and tried to make a political issue out of it.

I didn't agree with dragging the kids into it when it came from the right, and I don't really when it comes from our side either. Are these images tasteless and offensive? Sure. How many children in this world have failed to do things that their parents might find objectionable? Now that it's out there, Schaffer looks pretty foolish if he doesn't issue some statement that he doesn't approve. Failure to do so looks really bad. I wish we'd leave the kids out of it though.

Really good point. (0.00 / 0)
Just think, all Schaffer has to do is condemn this s_ _ _ and it could be put behind.  But there is a part of me that also wonders how a young person in today's world would find this offensive racism entertaining?

Is there a difference (4.00 / 2)
between what Justin puts on his facebook page and any actions he otherwise engages in publicly? I don't think so.  Once a candidates' family is used in public campaign materials, they've opened themselves up to public scrutiny.  There was no violation of privacy, so I don't see any problem.

As you allude to, all Schaffer's campaign had to do was ensure his family's public materials met some kind of reasonable standard.  If they didn't, they could have asked nicely for them to be placed in a private setting.  Especially considering how Bob has spouted off as supporting "family values" for so long.  It's another "Do as I say, not as I do" situation.  It looks like he doesn't believe his own rhetoric, which isn't terribly surprising.

I'll point out that it appears to me that Justin is only sorry that he got caught.  It doesn't sound like he's apologized for being militant, racist or misogynistic.

Abby was 19 when her facebook page was used. See the archived page for the outrage and denial when this happened to one of ours.

cleaned up his comments too, apparently (4.00 / 1)
Justin's page says he wrote on the wall at a group called Democracy Bad, Republic Good.  But there are only 11 wall posts, none from Justin.  What does that tell you?  The cover up has begun.

more clean up (4.00 / 2)
Justin's page also says that he discussed the topic "Democracy Killed Socrates" in the group Democracy Bad, Republic Good.  But of course, there are now no comments on that topic in that group.  The cover up continues.  By the way, that group seems to be a hate group.  At least it looks and feels that way.  Look for yourself.   Justin is also a member of the group called "America's Next Generation of Conservatives" where pubescent youths pretend to be hardened right wing thugs, just like the grownups they admire, such as Ann Coulter and the like.  This also reads like a hate group.

Hate group and violence (4.00 / 2)
This is another example of why the right-wing's violent rhetoric is so dangerous.  When their children grow up believing that hate and violence are acceptable, we're all worse for it.

And Bob, when handing out that "firm punishment", remember what Dr. Dobson says, "...the spanking should be of sufficient magnitude to cause the child to cry genuinely."

Minor correction (4.00 / 1)
Anyone can be a "fan" and there is no approval process for it. You can troll through them and get rid of them, but one would think that a candidate would want his kid to be a fan. And someone being a fan does not gain the page administrator access to see the person's profile.

Bottom line is that this is who this kid is, and he learned it from somewhere.

Josh Marshall Has This to Say (0.00 / 0)
Josh Marshall has this comment today:

So Paul Kiel and I had to consider the possibility that rather than being corrupt stooge willing to gloss over manifest outrages in exchange for a seat on the Abramoff gravy train, Schaffer may just have been ideologically pro-sweat shop and pro-slavery. And now Schaffer's son's endorsement of slavery on his Facebook page lends some new credence to this theory.

The Ticklish Subject of Blasphemy (0.00 / 0)
Justin Schaffer attends the University of Dayton, a Roman Catholic institution run by the Marianist Brothers: http://www.udayton.edu/ The University's website says that the school is dedicated to "challenging minds, shaping the future, and embracing faith and justice." So wee Schaffer appears to be something of the odd duck on campus. Now presumably even the ultra-leftist professors at the U of D have some residual affection for the humble carpenter who blessed the poor, fed the hungry, and said that those who live by the sword will perish by it. Given what the Roman church teaches about Jesus of Nazareth, the Schaffer boy's promotion of "Republican Jesus" would clearly be viewed as blasphemy. Three questions come to mind: (1) will the religious right take to their fainting couches over a clearly blashpemous attack on the founder of their faith?; (2) will Bob Schaffer punish his son for the content of the web page or for being stupid enough to get caught?; and (3) will the U of D expel the Schaffer offspring for being a bad catholic?

There is no elite, so take your place in the driver's seat.
