These are just two of the images on Bob Schaffer's son's facebook page. The original page is archived. Plenty of coverage on this over here and in the DenverRockyMountainPost. With the racist attacks on Barack Obama coming from the likes of Fox News, this is having a lot of impact here in the squarestate. Rep Rosemary Marshall is, uhm, a bit perturbed too. Also interesting is that Wadhams felt the only response necessary from the campaign is to put it all on college aged Justin with dad saying he's going to punish him.
Denver - State Representative Rosemary Marshall Colorado called on Bob Schaffer to immediately condemn the racist material on his son's personal Internet site. These images include a picture of the pyramids with a caption "SLAVERY GETS SHIT DONE" as well as an image of Jesus Christ holding an assault rifle in front of the Confederate battle flag, a symbol often used by the KKK and other racist and anti-Semitic groups.
"Schaffer needs to take responsibility and immediately condemn the racist images on his son's Internet page," stated state Rep. Rosemary Marshall, a long-time leader of Denver's African American community.
Bob Schaffer declined to comment when asked by the Denver Post. (DP, 8/5/2008)
Schaffer declined to comment? Wouldn't the response be something along the lines of, that's not how I raised my children?
More from the press release:
"It's enlightening to see some of the values Bob Shaffer, who runs as a "family values" man, has instilled in his own son: racism, homophobia, and a militant inversion of Christianity," said Allan Burns a businessman in Colorado Springs.
Schaffer has used his son in his first campaign commercial and on his campaign website.
"Schaffer is a coward to use his son for his campaign commercials but then point the finger rather at him for failing to follow his "values", stated Marshall.
Bob Schaffer's personal Facebook Internet page directly linked to his son's which included the racist images until the after the blogs and media begin asking questions late yesterday.
As the press release alleges, Justin's page was friends with dad's. That means dad approved the request either without looking at son Justin's page or didn't care what was on it. Since the actual Justin Schaffer page is now deleted we can no longer confirm that, but the son was a fan of the candidate page. What's that about the acorn not falling far from the tree? [corrected fan page details]
A bit about neo-confederates and the meaning behind the confederate flag below the fold. |
| johne :: Slavery gets sh*t done? - updated |
Interesting reading over at the Southern Poverty Law Center regarding the confederate flag:
You can see that in the fight over the Confederate flag, where the neo-Confederates say, "This is heritage, not hate. It has nothing to do with race at all." At the same time they're essentially defending white supremacy, they deny race has anything to do with it.
IR: So you see these neo-Confederates, the leaders and thinkers of groups like the League of the South (LOS), as basically white supremacist?
Simpson: They certainly want the revival of the principles of the Confederacy, and one those principles would in fact be white supremacy, unquestioned and explicit. The racism that's woven into their comments is often quite astonishing.
IR: What actually was the Confederate view of slavery?
Simpson: Confederates during the Civil War had no problem whatsoever in associating their cause with the protection of slavery and a system of white supremacy which they thought was inherent in the Confederate world order. The Confederates of 1861-65 were much more honest about the importance of slavery than are the neo-Confederates of today. |
