| Dick Wadhams loves himself some attention, doesn't he? Page 6 of the paper version of the Rocky has a picture of Schaffer's campaign HQ in Greenwood Village. The caption tells us that the press secretary, finance director and candidate listen as campaign manager Dick Wadhams "holds court". Seriously, does Dick or Bob want to be Senator? Here is what I really want to know: who is going to hold court in Bob Schaffer's Senate offices? We know Bob won't (can't?). Colorado voters should get to know this person before they vote this November.
Later in the main section of the RMN, Lynn Bartels tries to stoke the flames of Udall's "missed vote" non-controversy controversy. "The matter has turning into a tempest...". Really, Lynn (and John Temple)? Where? The same article has something that should turn into a tempest (emphasis mine):
"Udall did not keep any promise," said a fired-up Wadhams.
"He's not going to get away with it. We're going to shove a bunch of 30-second ads up his a-- on this issue over the course of the campaign. This guy was fundraising in Colorado and missing votes. That is reprehensible."
I'm not sure which is worse - the fact that Wadhams said something like this to a reporter or the fact that the reporter put it in the article and treated it as relevant to the story. Wadhams didn't mention anything about Mark being a Boulder Liberal, but does this quote really get to the topic at hand? No, it's just another angry Republican throwing a tantrum. And it gets reported as news. That's sad.
Moreover, this quote strikes me as overly violent. Tara Trujillo's counter is included next in the "article", but I think Tara really missed an opportunity to point out that Wadham's rhetoric is unnecessarily violent here (and it's probably not the only place either). His tone is the only thing that is reprehensible.
Let's do a thought exercise quickly: if Tara had said something similar, that the Udall campaign was going to shove a bunch of 30-second ads up Schaffer's a--, do you think that would have been covered. Yeah, I kinda think so too.
I'm obviously not aware of the space constraints Lynn was under, but the article fails to describe what the two votes she writes about were all about. I don't suppose relaying that information would be considered journalistic or anything. Also, does anyone have any idea how many votes Bob Schaffer missed while in Congress?

Ha! This is comedy gold: Sen. Wayne "Dullard" Allard gets an op-ed piece in the paper that, get ready for this, includes the following:
To say the least, I'm sick and tired of a "do-nothing" Congress.
Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Let me wipe the tears away before I continue.... Of all the do-nothing Senators to complain about a "do-nothing" Congress, we get Wayne Allard offering his opinion! Wayne, you're an embarrassment to this state, and that's putting things pretty mildly. What major piece of legislation did you author when your party held the majority? Oh, that's right: nothing. Not one. But you're playing your role as an impediment to a tee, aren't you? Yup - Wayne can follow directions and talking points real well. Too bad that wasn't what you were sent to Washington to do. The rest of his piece includes all kinds of "I love renewable energy" platitudes. The record speaks for itself, Wayne: you've been a major supporter of the largest energy companies and no friend to the renewable energy community.

What's this? I'm starting to enjoy reading Jason Salzman's "On The Media" pieces. I don't always agree with his opinion, but he seems like a pretty fair-minded guy. Today's piece calls out KOA's bias towards Rush Limbaugh. I wasn't aware of this, but apparently Rush gets a 60-second commentary on KOA every morning during Colorado's Morning News.
Jason would like to see a balancing voice, which is more than reasonable. Well, Rush's contract stipulates that his commentary be played during the morning drive. Director of AM programming Kris Olinger communicated to Salzman that they don't carry a response because he's not aware of any compelling short-form commentaries. I just hate it when the "liberal media" holds down conservative voices, don't you?
Jason threw Jim Hightower's name out as a candidate. He's looking for additinal suggestions. I can come up with more than one and will e-mail him those. You should do the same: salzmanj at rockymountainnews dot com. I would love to hear a progressive voice on KOA, even if it's only 60 seconds per weekday. |
