Well, Barack Obama is way too polite, but I'm not. Dobson lied:

Barack Obama said Tuesday that evangelical leader James Dobson was "making stuff up" when he accused the presumed Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible.

Dobson used his Focus on the Family radio program to highlight excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal.

Speaking to reporters on his campaign plane before landing in Los Angeles, Obama said the speech made the argument that people of faith, like himself, "try to translate some of our concerns in a universal language so that we can have an open and vigorous debate rather than having religion divide us."

Obama added, "I think you'll see that he was just making stuff up, maybe for his own purposes."

Ya think? It's clear that Dobson is a politician through and through. He's political enough to have absolved Newt Gingrich of his many ethical lapses just prior to the presidential campaign. That shows the depths to which Dobson will sink.

Zappatero :: Obama: Dobson is a liar

Dr. James Dobson forgave Newt, yet he won't let Obama - or millions of other Americans for that matter - practice their faith away from his bully pulpit. And he'll shamelessly attack others who dare criticize his methods - a method that included the Doctor fretting about the affects SpongeBob Square Pants on society. He was serious. And who could forget one of Ken Salazar's rare acts of courage in standing up against Dobsie?

John Kerry should have stood up to these same kind of attacks four years ago. Barack is doing it now. He has to, it's also good that he's doing it against a perpetual liar who's gotten away with it for far too long. And none of us should be afraid to say it.

There Was Once Another Religious Leader with a Mike (3.50 / 2)
He was from Royal Oak, MI, and often had a very wide audience.  He was narrow-minded and unwilling to consider good faith in the holders of opposing ideas.  He, also, attacked straw people, minorities really, to advance his agenda.  His name was Rev. Charles Caughlin.  You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F...

Yes, unlike Barack, John Kerry should have stood up to him and to the other bullies who stood in pulpits and spewed forth their displeasure and attacked his religious sincerity in order to advance a worldly political agenda.

Let us hope that we are seeing the end of the use of religion in partisan political purposes.

Fr. Caughlin... (4.00 / 1)
...was silenced by his bishop for straying from the care of souls into political topics. Unfortunately, marginal christian sects like the evangelical fundamentalists lack the same quality control that would be found in mainstream, traditional denominations. Dobson's access to a microphone makes him look more important than he actually is--either from the perspective of numbers of christains who share his theology or the relationship of that theology to the overall history of christianity. Peel back Dobson's slick exterior and you'll see the same ignorance and resentment that's been festering in America's hinterlands for generations. Never forget that "old time" tent revivalism traces its roots to the medicine shows: when the government started regulating snake oil medicines the quack doctors eliminated to overhead for miracle cures and reaped substantial tax benefits by switching to born again religion. (Notice how to this day Dobson blends religion and pseudo-therapy in the grand tradition of the traveling carnival.)

There is no elite, so take your place in the driver's seat.

Jim Wallis' Statement on Dobson (0.00 / 0)
This has begun to receive a lot of attention, as it should.  No one is the "spokesperson" of what is right and what is wrong.  Some of Wallis' statement:

James Dobson is insinuating himself into this presidential campaign, and his attacks against his fellow Christian, Barack Obama, should be seriously scrutinized. And because the basis for his attack on Obama is the speech the Illinois senator gave at our Sojourners/Call to Renewal event in 2006 (for the record, we also had Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republicans Rick Santorum and Sam Brownback speak that year), I have decided to respond to Dobson's attacks. In most every case they are themselves clear distortions of what Obama said in that speech. I was there for the speech; Dobson was not.

Or, you can read Greg Mitch's take on it at Kos http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...
and the Dallas Morning News http://religionblog.dallasnews...

Can't we keep religion out of partisan politics. There is a place for this, but only on issues, in my opinion.
