Warning about SEIU (0.00 / 1)
Stay away from Colorado for Health Care-SEIU.

SEIU is a terrible employer, they treat people like crap. Trust me, I know.

And they sell out their members to cozy up to big business. Andy Stern is a dictator who crushes all dissent. There is a climate of fear and intimidation inside SEIU. If you don't drink the purple kool-aid, and kiss management's ass, you're gone.

And they are working against the singlepayer health care movement to promote phony pro-corporate health care reforms like Republican governor Schwartznegger's.

They opposed the singlepayer proposal in the Colorado health care reform commission in favor of a weak water-downed proposal designed to curry favor with big business. They even have an alliance with Walmart. They are hypocrites and phonies.

just check out:

for more info.

Avoid the purple moonies at all costs, if you want to stay sane.

I can't say I agree (0.00 / 0)
I get that there is a lot of passion around the calnusres vs. SEIU debate, but a good number of my favorite people have had very positive experiences with SEIU.

SEIU Health Care Ideas have been awful (0.00 / 0)
I remember when the SEIU was really pushing union organizing into new directions, like the janitors. But, when it comes to Healthcare Reform, they are pretty conservative. Of the four healthcare plans considered by the 208 Commission last year in Colorado, the SEIU proposal covered the fewest people.

It is so bad that they've even been redbaiting on Single Payer. I couldn't find the specific reference, but here is an in-depth discussion on the CNA - SEIU conflict at the Nation, which usually puts out well-researched articles, especially when it comes to labor issues. Labor's Growing Pains

As the Year of Healthcare Reform unfolded, CNA's coalition pushed a single-payer bill through both houses in Sacramento; SEIU, heading up a separate coalition that included the California State Labor Federation, argued that single-payer wasn't politically viable and supported a Massachusetts-style mandate plan instead. Schwarzenegger vetoed both bills anyway. As the Year of Healthcare Reform hit its final month with no resolution in sight, Stern jetted in to work with Schwarzenegger to mold a third, even more compromised bill, which required Californians to buy care but set no caps on rates and no floor for minimum coverage; tucked inside were perks for SEIU, such as money for a trust fund for homecare workers' health benefits, to be administered by the union. "SEIU played the leading advocacy role and ultimately the lead compromise role on that bill," says Lighty. "Stern went behind the back of the California State Fed to cut the deal. But it didn't even pass in the Senate. It lost the backing of labor. It could not withstand the scrutiny. So how is it they can make a political viability argument?"

On this issue anyway, CNA is much more progressive than the SEIU. In fact, if the SEIU doesn't wake up they'll find the train has left the station.

seiu redbaiting singlepayer (0.00 / 0)
this is the release you are referencing:

Attack on RNs Parrots McCain's Attack on Obama's Health Plan

The Service Employees International Union is embracing the campaign rhetoric of Sen. John McCain's attack on Sen. Barack Obama's healthcare plan as a bludgeon to attack the nation's leading organization of registered nurses, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee noted today.

In a mailing to CNA/NNOC members this week, SEIU blasts CNA/NNOC for supporting a "government-run health care system." McCain has used almost identical language to disparage Obama's proposals for healthcare reform on an issue that will be a major focus of the fall campaign.

rest of the release at
http://www.calnurses.org/media...

SEIU is using CNA's leadership of the singlepayer fight to redbait them to nurses. They are spending millions of dollars in mailings to CNA members and sending organizers to CNA hospitals. They are also raiding the nurses union in New York State.

Before I was purged from SEIU as part of the crackdown on all dissent, I heard them discuss singlepayer as crackpot leftism in their internal staff meetings. They consciously crafted their health care commission proposal to be very conservative as part of a strategy of currying favor with big business in Colorado, to win support for their efforts to sell-out state employee rights -- giving up on full collective bargaining and arbitration, selling out the right to strike, and cutting a deal with Ritter that would benefit them over other unions. They wanted to win the support of the corporate press by portraying themselves as the moderate "pro-business" union, against other unions which they said are needlessly adversarial (meaning those unions want to actually provide decent representation, rather than making backroom deals with the management). The conservative health care proposal is part of this overall strategy of sucking up to business. It's not working very well, since the right wing prefers no unions to even the most craven company unions. That's why "right-to-work" is on the ballot.

SEIU is a bunch of hypocrites and phonies. That is why their big west coast local rebelled and is leading a reform movement, despite the Stern gang threats to put their under receivership.

Basically SEIU uses a lot of leftwing rhetoric, but their real positions - stripped of the slick public relations buzzwords - are on the rightwing of the labor movement on many issues. Even on immigrant rights, they are to the right of the grassroots immigrant rights groups, supporting guest worker programs and compromising with McCain. Many people are waking up and seeing SEIU for what it really is.
