Methane at 1 million times above normal in Gulf

there are now
unbelievably high levels of methane in the Gulf.
:

As much as 1 million times the normal level of methane gas has been found in some regions near the Gulf of Mexico oil spill

wade norris :: Methane at 1 million times above normal in Gulf
Texas A&M University oceanography professor John Kessler, just back from a 10-day research expedition near the BP Plc oil spill in the gulf, says methane gas levels in some areas are "astonishingly high."
"We saw them approach a million times above background concentrations" in some areas, Kessler said.
The scientists were looking for signs that the methane gas had depleted levels of oxygen dissolved in the water needed to sustain marine life.
Kessler said oxygen depletions have not reached a critical level yet, but the oil is still spilling into the Gulf, now at a rate of as much as 60,000 barrels a day, according to U.S. government estimates.

"What is it going to look like two months down the road, six months down the road, two years down the road?" he asked.

For the Gulf Residents, I am sorry I have to drive a car and use gasoline.
I hope that this Administration will help us to get affordable electric or other mass transit that is powered by renewable energy soon.

Especially when we learn that we could have had Electric vehicles in the early 1900's.

At about the time Ford Motor Co. was founded in 1903, Edison had made inroads with battery technology and started offering nickel-iron batteries for several uses, including automobiles. Later that year, he announced plans to convert four large touring cars to electric power (using his own batteries, of course), a plan that reeks of a publicity stunt to sell batteries but was enough to get him listed in the Standard Catalog. And though he prodded Ford into producing gasoline cars, he was soon denouncing them:

"Electricity is the thing. There are no whirring and grinding gears with their numerous levers to confuse. There is not that almost terrifying uncertain throb and whirr of the powerful combustion engine. There is no water-circulating system to get out of order - no dangerous and evil-smelling gasoline and no noise."

Even now, we find we could have had electric as late as the 1990's but  that version of the Electric Vehicle was killed.

We must have the choice for affordable electric cars to stop this from happening ever again, and to put the need for oil away for good.

It's a dead zone in waiting.
This is just another sign of that.

And There Is a Storm Tracking Toward the Gulf
It has not reached tropical storm, let alone hurricane strength yet; but it has been moving steadily from south of the Lesser Antilles until it's now over Cuba.  Let's hope it either dies or follows a southern track across the Gulf.

Plenty of lefties already using
'disaster' to characterize this situation.  When does 'disaster' change into 'catastrophe'?  If you thought there was a massive dead zone in Gulf waters before, just wait until this disaster's effects cascades through the region.

We Do Not Know How Serious This Will Be?
We really do not know just how devastating this blowout will be. There are studies which show that the Gulf healed.  This is not to say that I condone any of this, especially the reckless management decisions which caused the blowout, loss of life and the horrible concentration of pollutants in this large, life-giving body of water.  In the short term, it certainly will kill a lot of life and will devastate a huge swath of human existence. I think it will clean.  It may take 10 or more  years; but, eventually, the northern Gulf will be life giving again.  In part, I believe this because I have been to many of the wetlands and barrier islands polluted by Ixtoc, and life seems to have returned to its prior condition. I have spoken with qualified people living in Isla del Carmen, Vera Cruz, Tampico and Brownsville who have verified this somewhat optimistic assessment.

Let's hope we all have learned a very strong lesson and that things going forward are safer and less prone to any accidents, including these very awful ones.

I Do Not Believe That the LEL of Methane Can Be Reached
Salt (and sea) water generally absorbs methane into a solution.  This has been the case numerous times when salt water has penetrated a natural gas well, and the gas disappeared.  I had a share in one such well in Central Texas and watched it happen, along with the disappearance of my and my investors' investment.

The lower explosive limit (LEL) of methane in air is about 4% at 20 degrees C.  The most productive gas wells in the Gulf have flow rates of the order of 1-5 million cubic feet per day.  If we assume that Macombo has a flow rate of 10 times that and compare it to the volume of sea water in the Gulf and account for the slow, but steady inflow from rivers and the Caribbean, I do not believe that there will ever be a concentration of methane high enough to saturate the water and permit methane flow in explosive mixtures with air.  So, we will likely not see a storm cause a methane fire or explosion in the Gulf.

Let's really hope that the relief well(s) will be completed without mishap earlier rather than later.
