Denver City Council Special Election - Vote Susan Shepherd

by: Sustainer

Wed Apr 28, 2010 at 12:01:39 PM MST

In the April 25th Post Susan Barnes-Gelt's Op/Ed describes the demographic changes that have happened in northwest Denver in the last decade or so as including an influx of, "...younger, diverse and more progressive urbanites."

Unfortunately, just this weekend, City council candidate and term limited State Senator Paula Sandoval's campaign actually mailed a letter addressed to "fellow Republicans" in which she is warmly endorsed by former Republican state legislators including Chuck Berry.

Berry is the President of the ultra right wing business group called Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry, or CACI.  He opposed health care reform, opposed closing corporate tax loopholes to prevent further cuts to education and services, and supports the anti-working family legislation known as "right-to-work."

Much can be known about us by the company we keep.

Would you rather see a fresh and progressive city, or "...the last gasp of calcifying North Denver politics..." represented by Sandoval?

Susan Shepherd is truly the breath of fresh air North Denver needs.  She'll see to it that Denver's future is smart AND sustainable. I hope you'll check her out at [www.shepherdfornorthwestdenver.com www.shepherdfornorthwestdenver.com]

It is interesting
that Sandoval is in one of the most Democratic districts and she's been so moderate.

Move North Denver forward
This has been an interesting election, and represents a true tipping point for North Denver.  I'm a relative newcomer to the neighborhood - 10 years - but appreciate its history and what the Sandoval's have done for the neighborhood.

Having attended some of the debates, though, it's clear to me that Paula Sandoval is just sort of there.  She really hasn't been able to articulate how she would serve the district in a manner that will move it forward, while also retaining some of its unique aspects and history.

Susan Shepherd, on the other hand, has actually presented concrete ideas of how North Denver will move forward.  She weaves sustainability into many of her ideas, but she's not simply using it as a buzzword.  She talks about sustaining and re-energizing our local business districts, working with City Council to enact ordinances that will be friendlier for urban agriculture, and connecting North Denver to the rest of the city through transportation corridors.

I've been very impressed by many of the candidates in this race - we have a strong future for North Denver.  For my money, though, Susan Shepherd is the progressive leader that we need.
