Romanoff Denounces Arizona Immigration Law

by: Romanoff for Colorado

Tue Apr 27, 2010 at 13:26:27 PM MST

(Arizona, WTF?   - promoted by Fong)

U.S. Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff today issued the following statement:

"The passage of Senate Bill 1070 marks a terrifying turn of events, not only for Arizona but for the United States as a whole.  Anyone who lives in or visits Arizona may now be stopped if a law-enforcement official has "reasonable suspicion" to believe that he or she is unlawfully present.

As the son and grandson of immigrants - and as an American - I am outraged by this decision.  Arizona's new law invites racial profiling and puts police officers themselves in an impossible position, by requiring them, in effect, to violate the rights of people they are sworn to protect.

This law is unwise, unsafe and unconstitutional.  Indeed, it is un-American.

Arizona's action cannot stand:

(1)   Today I ask the U.S. Department of Justice to file for injunctive relief in federal court to prohibit the enforcement of the Arizona statute.

(2)   I urge the Attorney General to dispatch a legal team to Arizona to defend the Constitutional rights of those affected by this reckless law.

(3)   I call on Congress to replace Arizona's misguided effort with federal action - now long overdue.

Romanoff for Colorado :: Romanoff Denounces Arizona Immigration Law
We need comprehensive immigration reform.  What Arizona has enacted is a poor and dangerous substitute.

Comprehensive reform means securing our borders.  It means enforcing the laws against drug running, smuggling, and human trafficking.  It means providing a path by which individuals who are willing to work hard, pay taxes and play by the rules can enjoy legal status in a society that benefits from their labor.  Read my 10-point plan http://www.andrewromanoff.com/...

The haphazard enforcement of our immigration laws - and Washington's failure to reform them - have split families, sown fear and confusion, and undermined respect for the rule of law itself.  While Congress dodges the debate over immigration reform, states are expected to pay for mandates they cannot afford and to address a problem they cannot solve.

We deserve better.  We deserve a fair and practical system that preserves our nation's security, strengthens our economy, and reflects our values.  That is the approach I will champion as a member of the U.S. Senate."

About Andrew Romanoff:

Elected to four terms in the Colorado legislature, Andrew Romanoff was Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009. He led the Democrats to their first back-to-back majorities in more than 40 years.  His leadership earned national recognition, including Governing magazine's top honor as Public Official of the Year.

That's what I'm talking about.
Civil rights is at the core of this issue, and Andrew has gotten to the point in a strong, passionate way.  Thank you!

federal vs. state rights
Harry Reid said yesterday that he wants to hold off on immigration reform and other Congress people have said it's not likely in 2010 http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

Texas is now considering a similar bill http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

How many states will we need to combat once we decide to take this on?

On Mario's Show Last Night
The Speaker sounded like someone I would want to vote for.  He presented his outrage, he presented how would handle it differently.  He gave examples of good ways and bad ways to work with this issue.  I was very impressed.  He didn't mention his opponent at all, he didn't need to, he was presenting himself as a frontrunner, a leader.  It was the first time I could remember hearing him when he didn't have to resort to taking digs at his opponent.  I thought maybe his new communications guy was doing some good.  Maybe he could turn around this ship with so much potential.

Then I got another one of his emails this morning and I remembered how petty and small his campaign is.  It's a shame, he had me for a little bit.

I completely agree
He is great. His campaign has sucked.

Another example of the punditization of America
"Candidate A is clearly the best person for the job, but I disagree with his campaign strategy, so I'm leaning toward voting for candidate B."

This is what happens when the TV "news" isn't really news, but just horse-race punditry.  People lose the distinctions between process vs. substance, rhetoric vs. action, politics vs. principles, spin vs. fact.

It's more important that a campaign be winnable
than have a great candidate who can't win a campaign.

Is it you who writes those press releases?

Note to Romanoff shills: I know Peter does not write your press releases and I'm hoping that Peter is wrong when he says you won't represent unions (even though Ken Gordon is grinning ear to ear).

Tell me again, what's the difference between Romanoff and Senator Bennet? That Romanoff is a progressive? HA

[ Parent ]
pffffffff-huh? Are you referring to this?:
You:
"does this mean he won't be representing unions should he win the Senate seat?"

Me:
"No [it doesn't mean that]."

It was a ridiculous question to begin with. A one-word answer was more than it deserved.

"It's more important that a campaign be winnable "
Then Bennet should drop out, since he's getting trounced in the caucuses and assemblies and Romanoff is polling better against the Republicans.

You can't have it both ways. When Romanoff supporters do underscore the differences between the candidates, you guys whine that we're "going negative" by presenting factual accounts of Mr. Bennet's performance in office and qualifications for the job (or lack thereof).

"Note to Romanoff shills: "
What does "shill" mean to you?  Are people who support Mr. Bennet "shills"? Or is it just an insult you use to mean "people I disagree with"?

Are you a "Bennet shill"?

Peter
You understand you represent everything that would turn away potential voters for the Speaker, right?

Are you a Bennet shill?  Because you do nothing but help his cause.

My first post in this thread was begging for a reason to like this guy, you and his entire campaign help push away that thought.

Congrats.  Mission accomplished.

Your previous posts betray
that you are a staunchly-decided Bennet supporter. For you to now now try to pose as an undecided voter with the same screen name does not pass the sniff test.

Posted March 4th over at that other place.
Baloney or not, I am new to this, staunch would hardly be the word to describe me.  I have been in the party and interested in politics for less than a year.  I have never hidden that here or where this was posted earlier in the year.  In this I describe going to his organizing meeting in JeffCo, I believe it was a Friday night.  I know I'm a bit of a dweeb, I had better things to do on a Friday night, but I wanted to get involved.

Mr. Speaker,

We met early last fall when you had joined the race for Senator.  We had the chance to speak one on one about the issues you felt were important to Colorado.  I was new to the party and didn't know your background.  I did my research and was impressed.  You seemed like someone with a strong message and the history of action to back it up.

I cringed a little when I heard you speak at an organizing meeting in my county.  You spent much of your short speech mocking our Senator and how he got there.  I was there to hear about you, what you wanted to do, by focusing on your opponent, it made me curious, about your opponent.

Then I started getting your emails, you seemed to take on a very bitter tone.  It's not fair, he is taking PAC money.  Frankly, it was very transparent that the decision was made to not take PAC money because your opponent was much better at getting it than you.  Trying to demonize the issue, especially with your past, was kind of pathetic.

Then there was the forum missed even though he had said he couldn't go to, again, snarkiness.

Then the young democrats, a chance to show us who you are and what you are about.  A chance once again overshadowed by your negative message and sarcasm.

It wasn't fair that the Senator was raising so much money, it wasn't fair that the president backed him.  Again, if the president backed you I don't feel that you would be taking such a strong stand.

The video you sent out with three industry guys was when you really went over the top. Seriously??

Now the Baca et al letter.  I am one of those new democrats, recruited during the Obama campaign.  She may be a fine woman and has done a lot for the state and party.  I don't know her, so the email to me is just another whiny cry for help.

What I want from a candidate?  Tell me about you, tell me about your passions, your plans, your track record.  Mr. Speaker, you have all that, but somewhere along the way someone took a hold of your campaign and decided snark, and sarcasm, and bitterness was the way to go.

While this took place over the past 4-5 months, a leader evolved in the Senate.  Someone who was willing to stand on the floor and denouce the deal making even if the pols brushed it off as naivety.  Thats the kind of poulism I can get behind.  He hasn't stopped there with his speech and proposals yesterday focusing on what is broken and offering solutions.  Then he championed the public option and is fighting to make it a reality.

I think the primary has changed our Senator, frankly only seperating him more and more from you and your campaign.  For that, thank you for running.  At every corner, one candidate has taken the high road, and one has not.

That said, thanks to your horribly run campaign, I will be caucusing for the first time in my life, for the senator.

It didn't have to be this way.

Good for Romanoff
to come out unequivocally on this issue.

Um, where's our esteemed Sen. Udall?  Still busy chasing the magical bipartisan pony?  What leadership!
