by: Fong

Fri Apr 23, 2010 at 17:25:44 PM MST

I'm in Colorado Springs for the Romanoff v Bennet Senate debate. This is their second debate, the first is here.

Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

I've heard you can listen to it live at KRDO.

Please join in the comments.

FIGHT!

Look below the fold for updates.

Fong :: Romanoff v Bennet Debate Open Thread
7:00 It's a packed house with about 1 dozen hi def cameras surrounding.

Questions from the audience can be submitted until 7:10.

"One of these gentlemen will be a critical vote."

Eric Singer from KRDO is the moderator. We're waiting for the tv producers for the go.

The coin toss for who gets to start has already happened--Romanoff won. There will be 30 secs and 10 secs for the debate. Audience applause is strictly forböden so we can get as many questions in as possible.

***UTTERLY PARAPHRASING***

7:05 AR: Thanks to everyone... any politician can promise to clean up Washington.. I led the fight for the blue transformation in CO... ref C... "You promise to fight for the Public option and then lash out when your bluff is called... Congress is pay to play "I am not a perfect messenger but I am the only candidate that is not taking cash that corrupts it.

MB: I worked to fix companies, worked for Hick, leading reform of DPS, what we see playing out on our tv sets, is a rhetoric detached from the facts, voted for the strongest Wall st reform since the 1930s. All of us share an abiding concern for the next generation.

First Question: In what ways do you disagree with the policies of Obama and Reid

MB Just had a huge disagreement with the cut for Orion. We thought it was wrong (Udall and entire CO delegation).

AR: I support the president. We need the same courage Obama has in the Senate as well. Not a single Senator stood up to the Senator from NE. I will stand up.

MB: "I have no handlers"

2:What are the differences between the two of you

NOTE: Romanoff is very fiesty and attacking Bennet. Michael Bennet is very thin lipped.

Bennet: There are no differences between us. Anyone who is paying attention to this debate knows that. The discussion should be about fixing problems.

3: Some observers have described your campaign as erratic. Cadell, spokeslamb, press conference to remind us of your race

AR: The press conf from Jan came from the calls re governor's race. I've been recognized by 4 orgs as the best legislator in America.

4:This is your first campaign, and so far, your performance in caucus and assemblies has been lacking. You are petitioning on, given your lackluster (groans)

MB: I'm not worried about tough enough from being a school superintendent. We are happy with the outcome of the caucuses. Fundraising... 18,000 donors on the campaign, one of the smallest percentages of PAC money nationwide. At the end of the day, CO will see through this.

5: Do you support labeling about genetically mod food.

MB: I don't know much but consumer protections rule.

AR: Yes, I do. I believe we outta have truth in adverts esp from prods from overseas.

6: Do you support nuclear energy in the mix of other renewables:

AR: There is no sage way to dispose of waste.

MB: I support continued engineering about it, I remain unpersuaded about the econ viability about it. THere are a lot of fictions about what the French are doing but they're fictions. 18% of our energy is from nuclear power. We need a policy that relies on renewables

7: What do you consider comp immigration reform

MB: I<3 DREAM act, serious commitment ot secure borders, a lawful way to beocme citizens, pay a fine, learn English. I don't want our police focused on what AZ is focused on.

AR: Reform, sec our borders, clear rules for employers and employees, providing a path to citizenship,... the status quo is indefensible because Washinton is broken. I've been disappointed by the attacks which are painful because my mom and grandparents are all immigrants and our culture is better off because of the contribs from immigrants.

DADT and DOMA

AR: I support the repeal of both. this is not an issue on which to compromise. Our own party has ducked and dodged and bobbed and weaved.

MB: I support the repeal of both. Ditto Romanoff

8: How would you deal with the balance of payments-- the prob w China?

MB: China has clearly been manipulating its currency. We need to pressure them strongly.

AR: CO Springs alone has lost 14,000 in the last 2.5 yrs. I believe in competition. AMericans can win a fair fight. We shouldnt' foce American workers to compete against countries that don't honor human rights and labor right.

9: Internet security and Google's recent testimonty before the US Senate.

AR: I support net neutrality and security, I beleve corporate influence in this case has had a distorting effect on this issue ** grr... note hold on

MB: Mebbe this is regarding google's pull out of China? I also believe in net neutrality and I voted for the importation of prescription drugs.

AR: Drug cos

7:33

10:Vote on Pinion Canyon?

MB: I led the 1 yr moratorium on it. I'm not compelled by what the Army says about expansion. We need to recgnize the military is to our state and particularly this community. I have challenged the Army to understand that people think promises were broken.

AR: I don't support the expmasion. We don't say it often enough that so many folks are returning from  combat.

11: Bernanke? Should he be there?

AR: It has taken 1.5 years to clean it up, folks who are guilty have been reqarded.

MB: I voted for him on teh banking cmmt and i voted for him on the floow. It would have been impossible to confrim anyone else for that job. We are weeks away from comprehensive reform of Wall Street.

13: Carbon Tax?
AR: This is where I differ from MB, you don't have to be a conspiracy throrist, just follow the money

MB: We need a cap. However it is designed, it needs to be designed well... CO is well-positioned to be a leader. You don't need to believe in climate change to know that we should build good jobs and rely less on foreign oil.

14: How do we wind down the war in Afganistan

MB: First, we are winding down the Iraq war which I didn't support to begin with. I think we shoudl give this time to work.

AR: I have faith in BO and the troops. I have no faith in Karzai. We need to restore our role in Dem and HR.

15: What deficit reduction action would you support?

AR: We are spending twice as much as the rest of the world are on HC which would be fine if the results were twice as good. We need to

MB: HC for the next 3 years will cut 1.3 bill. I worked on costs and transparency. We haven't invested in our infrastructure. Go to the website to read on this issue.

16: Tell us our background in practicing democracy

MB: I believe we've lost somethign in this country because we don't watch Walter Cronkite. All the tv news channels are sellign soap. I've traveled CO speaking with people. tkaing their criticisms, and said the same things everywhere. We need more involvement

AR: I'm proud of the work I did to make the Capitol transparent and accessible. e-Tools can help er something.

Question on role of the Fed I missed. SRY

7:53 17: Candidate Asking Candidate section

MB: We've herad that Jane Norton wants to eliminate teh dept of ed and Buck wants to get rid of Dept of Energy. Why would they those positions?

AR I've got the best ability to beat them. I've led the Dmeocrats to back to back majorities. One party in Washington is the Party of NO

AR: Proprietary colleges are gouging students with loand. The Senate Banking CMMTE could have

MB:the only time I'm reminded of Washington is when we are debating. We've just taken the ability of private lenders to loaning to our students.

They are each then given 60 seconds to ask for your support. I think you know the drill.

/end live blog.

They are both very good debaters. Thank you all for reading and listening and just plain participating, no matter how you do it.

I know I missed some great questions. Apologies for typos and if I wasn't succinct enough.

Good opening statement by Romanoff.
Hello... bam ... attack.

Senator Bennet just said something about television. Does anyone know which station it is on? Is it live?

Live in C Springs I think
I don't know if any Denver stations are carrying it.  Radio it is :)

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

Bennet -- funny
The moderator made a comment about their "handlers".  Senator Bennet said, "I have no handlers". (Laugh)

joke about calls for Andrew to run for Governor
...coming from Michael Bennet was funny.  Andrew is great at these; his natural charisma really shines through.

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

I have heard them say that many times
and I am not one of his supporters.

yeah i've heard him say it too
he has a tendency to re-use good jokes.  No cat stories tonight though ;)

It's still a good joke

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

Enormously important
Why is everything so damn "enormously important"?

because it's campaign season
:)

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

Romanoff calls Bennet out of predatory lending and $$$
I really like the part where they could ask each other questions.  Romanoff asked Bennet about why he voted to allow predatory lending practices against students while taking money from the people they were supposed to regulate.

Silence and stuttering from Bennet...and then something that didn't really answer the question, saying he votes for colorado...or something

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

Oy Vey
I haven't read your comments and my battery is about to die.

They are both very good debaters. Thank you all for reading and listening and just plain participating, no matter how you do it.

I was going to say something flattering here to Andrew
but since I am outnumbered 5 to 1, I guess I don't need to, huh?

well I'll be nice
Bennet's joke about not having handlers was well done.

Sorry Michael Bennet, but I'm a real person too

[ Parent ]
That was a decent debate
The questions were generally good. A better format could have included a mechanism for following up and forcing the candidates to answer the questions more directly.

It also would be better if these debates were at least two or three hours long, more in keeping with the Lincoln-Douglas tradition.

Still, this was a pretty good exercise in democracy.

I feel bad for Michael Bennet
This was obviously not his best work, and yes, I wish there was a buzzer under his chair that went off when he said "enormously". It would be enormously helpful. He sounded tired.

This poor guy works on the other side of the country five days a week - 1700 miles. He flies all the way home for the weekend and all the way back on Sunday. He has a family with three young children, and campaigns, too. I can't imagine having constant jet lag for months at a time.  Andrew does not have a job --all he does is campaign. He can be well rested every day of the week. Why on Earth would someone schedule these debates while Congress is in session? It just seems cruel.

Someone who knows Michael Bennet well told me he works harder than any other person they have ever met.  Senator Bennet -- if you are reading this -- it's okay to say no to a debate during session. At least this voter thinks so!

I did enjoy the humor during the first half of this debate -- they both have quick wits and are great on their feet. I still say the policy differences between them are undectable. Andrew is a very good speaker; he still hasn't made the case that he could do something Michael can't, or would vote differently 99% of the time. I still think Andrew would be replacing an excellent Senator who is already in the seat, and that just doesn't make sense to me. Surely there are other jobs out there besides this one. G-d knows we need Democrats in more of them.

I give credit where credit is due. I am not a hack or a zombie-follower. Andrew was at his best tonight. Michael won the first debate; Andrew won this one. I am looking forward to the next one... which will hopefully be under more fair circumstances.

And to Andrew -- thank you for not telling the cat story again. ; )

Statement from Romanoff campaign

For immediate release:

BENNET TRIES TO DODGE WESTWOOD BULLET

Sen. Bennet skirts question connecting contributions to inaction on predatory lending

Sen. Bennet continued to dodge questions and duck responsibility tonight.  He refused to explain his decision to accept a contribution from Westwood College on March 19 - three days before his committee failed to protect students from Westwood's predatory lending practices.  When Speaker Romanoff asked Sen. Bennet if this was simply the way Washington worked, Bennet replied: "I don't know."

Speaker Romanoff successfully brought to light similar examples of Sen. Bennet responding to legislation influenced by corporate contributions and quietly selling out the interests of those he was appointed to serve.  Among the issues cited were Sen. Bennet's turnabout on the public option and his voting against legislation that would have allowed the courts to protect homeowners from foreclosure.

The evening dramatically demonstrated how Sen. Bennet's pattern of quiet corporate-funded retreat on matters of substance is in fact the way business is done in Washington - the real answer to the question the Senator dodged.

Westwood College

-          In 2009, Westwood College had two class action lawsuits filed against them claiming, among other things, deceptive lending practices involving "student loans"

o   The first suit was settled for $7 million in May of 2009.

o   The second suit, filed in Texas, is still pending

-          In 2008 Westwood College made over $250 million in profits

-          Westwood does not offer "student loans" but rather an opportunity to finance any tuition gaps that exist.

o   These loans come with a high interest rate and are often given without any checks on the student's ability to repay the loan.

Legislation:

-          Congresswoman Waters introduced an amendment to the House Consumer Protection legislation that would close the loophole that allows colleges like Westwood to skirt the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

o   Westwood skirts the law because their gap loans are "consumer financing" rather than a traditional student loan program.

o   The amendment failed in committee.

-          Congresswoman Waters said - "I believe we have an obligation to ensure that these schools are not allowed to continue to prey on students.  By subjecting these schools to CFPA's (Consumer Financial Protection Agency) authority, the quality of the student loans these schools provide will improve".

Bennet:

-          Received a contribution from Westwood College on 3/19/10 for $2,400.

-          The Banking Committee marked up Dodd's consumer protection bill on 3/22/10

-          Sen. Bennet had the opportunity to stop these predatory lending practices but did nothing.

Just when I was praising Andrew's performance in this debate to friends...
for not going negative, he has to release this.  So much for staying positive.

Well...
Perhaps you should positively encourage the Senator to give back the Goldman Sachs and Westwood College donations.  You are in a unique position to help the Senator understand these conflicts of interest.

[ Parent ]
I am one of thousands of his supporters -- just a vocal progressive one.
Sorry to disappoint you -- not a big fish over there.

I also do not know much about the Sachs and Westwood situation. The only place I have ever heard about it is on Square State -- not exactly knows as "fair and balanced" coverage on every issue. I read what you post with interest and way til the next person responds. I don't pretend to be an expert on all subjects, and definitely not on financial stuff, so I tend to leave it alone and let people who know what they are talking about handle it. You may have noticed there are not a whole lot of Bennet supporters hanging out over here S2, so there can be quite a lull in between. I guess I am a glutton for punishment?

Despite all the bitching and flame-throwing over here between us, I really do respect everyone for being here and spouting off. I would much rather know people who disagree with me passionately then those that just don't care. The war is not between moderate Dems and way-left progressives, or any point in between, it is between apathy and progress. JMHO. Have a good weekend.

If we stop...
paying attention to Monger, maybe it will go away. Then I don't have to feel all "weak in the knees" (aka gag) when she writes her epic love letters about her famous "friend."

If only if only.

Senator Buck will give me a great sense of "Buyers Remorse" in the way that it would feel like my Senator was screwing me over.

At risk of sounding like I'm piling on ...
it really has to be acknowledged that Michael Bennet did not do well tonight at all, and that's putting it kindly.

One of the many benefits of a primary is that we get to find out who's ready for prime time and who's not. Tonight we got an answer to that question. If Michael were to turn in this kind of performance in the general election, he'd get shredded.  There are some things a candidate just can't compensate for with any amount of money.

Conversely, Andrew Romanoff has demonstrated a superior knowledge of the issues and a clear vision for how to solve the problems we face as a state and as a nation. And he's shown that he's far better prepared to take on and defeat the GOP nominee in November.

Actually, all he has shown us
the past six months is he can't manage a statewide race to save his political life, ... and that he is a pretty good speaker.

[ Parent ]
If what you're saying is true,
then Bennet must be a really, really bad candidate. He has the advantage of being able to saturate the airwaves with TV ads paid for by his Wall Street bankster buddies' bottomless ATM cards (funded by our taxpayer bailout dollars, of course), his opponent, according to you, "can't manage a statewide race to save his political life," and yet in reality (as opposed to the fairy tales continually spun at ColoradoTrolls.com), Romanoff is kicking Bennet's butt at every turn in the primary, and the butt-kickings are getting more and more severe as every week passes. And why? Because We the People don't want Michael Bennet as our senator, no matter how much corporate cash he pours into his slick irrelevant TV ads.

Romanoff is kicking Bennet's butt in the world of party hacks.
That's about it.  My independent friends, Obama friends, and non-party Dem friends LOVE HIM.

"All my friends are voting for ..." Hmm, that sounds like the Rasmussen school of statistical methods.
The people who take part in the caucuses and assemblies are the base, a.k.a, the party faithful. They're not "hacks," although some hacks do infiltrate the process and make a lot of meaningless noise. (See: ColoradoTrolls.com)

Except for that one thing,
Bennet has been a great candidate,

He hasn't whined about not getting the job he feels he deserves.

He hasn't become a hypocrit about donations because he couldn't get those donations.

He hasn't mocked the opponent even though there is so much to mock.

He has stayed on message.

He has put together a strong staff and retained them.

He has stuck with a sound campaign strategy.

He has handled his campaign like someone I would be honored to vote for.

At the end of the day, if the Senator doesn't get the job, he will be fine and move on.  One hopes the same for the Speaker.

The one constant about this primary is one side felt they needed to attack from the get go.  The other side, while constantly baited, for the most part has stayed above the fray and kept it civil because we realize in the end that they are two good candidates.

The big difference is one is giving you reasons to vote for him.  The other can only stress why not to vote for the other guy.

I look forward to standing with you in the fall supporting our candidate.

[ Parent ]
Andrew had a great night
and Michael did not. There is more to being a winner in a Senate race than one's speaking skills, Peter.  Good  judgment and fundraising are just as important -- maybe more so. I was thinking during the debate, "I wish these two could run together".

Ugh my spelling
"cuntries". That made me laugh.

My Word isn't worth using for the spell check and google docs is quirky. Go figure.

Thanks for doing this, Fong!
