When Congressman Mike Coffman broke his ankle a few years ago he got the best health care around - at minimal cost - and with a good laugh. Almost all of it at taxpayers' expense:
Coffman, who has great taxpayer-subsidized insurance as a member of Congress, went for X-rays, found that he'd broken a bone, and received a cast and some painkillers. It cost him a $30 co-pay. A friend of a friend is a specialist, who saw Coffman on short notice and concluded that the conservative lawmaker would not need surgery. The visit to the specialist -- at an exclusive clinic in Vail -- wasn't covered by his insurance, but Coffman, who makes $174,000 a year as a House member, had no trouble paying the $350 out-of-pocket expense. Coffman was the picture of humility and expressed profound gratitude that his fellow citizens would provide him with such excellent health care - NOT:
"I successfully tested our health care system," he said, with a laugh. "It works."
Aurora shooting victim Caleb Medley is in critical condition now. He has a good sense of humor, a stellar family and a great circle of friends. His healthy recovery could depend on his good spirits and the ready sense of humor that shows in his photos.
Being uninsured, he could also be subject to an estimated hospital bill of $2 Million:
What happened late Friday evening at the movie theater could ruin the young family's finances. Caleb doesn't have health insurance, and his medical bills could amount to $2 million, according to his family.
I wish all the best for him and his family and newborn baby. I also urge everyone who sees this to help Caleb with his challenge and pass along some words of encouragement.
I have no doubt Caleb will be far more grateful of any help, and have far more respect for the doctors, nurses and therapists serving him, than that shallow Congressman who works to deny from his neighbors the same privileges and health care services he so readily accepts - with an unknowing, and uncaring - laugh. |
