"You know, in South Carolina, Newt won practically every, every group there except those with higher incomes and those with advanced degrees "
--- Former US Senator (& actor,) Fred Thompson (Meet the Press, 1/29/2012)
In a weird sort of way, the Republican Primary proves evolutionary theory. It's a knock-down, drag-out, bare knuckles fight that only the strong can survive.
The winners even get to eat their prey --- gobbling up the endorsements of those who fall . . . .
Fun stuff. But it makes one wonder.
If Romney wins --- will he be inoculated against his many position flips; "Romney Care;" and his "Vulture Capitalism" past at Bain?
If Newt survives --- will he be inoculated against his messy personal life; his work with Freddie Mac; his personal appearance with Nancy Pelosi in a Climate Change ad, and his past ethical and leadership lapses as Speaker of the House?
My biggest fear is that the Republicans will use up all of the good stuff in the primaries and not leave the Dems any for the general.
Selfish Bastards.
I suppose it's possible that Newt could take it, but I think the safe money is still on Romney.
Make no mistake about it. As messy and nasty as this primary is, the general will be much, much worse. Once the Repub nominee is selected, and the fog of right-wing partisan war clears --- the Repubs will unite behind the survivor.
And, despite Obama's somewhat disappointing first four years, if Dems and Libs fail to unite --- Obama will lose.
That means: more tax breaks for the wealthy, increased aggression towards Iran, gutted EPA regs, and austerity measures at a time when the recovery is just starting to gain ground.
On the other hand. If Newt wins . . We get a colony on the Moon!
Cool.
The only silver lining to a Romney wins scenario is --- the Tea Party Loses. The Republican Establishment will have bared it's teeth and shown dominance over the baggers.
(Of course the Donald could still run as an independent and save the baggers.)
Still --- wouldn't it be great if BOTH the Republcan Establishment AND the Tea Party lost?
I think so.
