Cease and Desist from the Denver Post

by: Fong

Wed Nov 16, 2011 at 12:11:07 PM MST

Some copyrighted images of a public protest were shared here on squarestate in a diary entitled "Denver Post Whitewashes Police Brutality". The diary has been temporarily taken down and will be edited to remove all copyrighted news (if that isn't a strange term, I don't know what is).

So please remember that when discussing the somehow copyrighted "news", especially in a light that criticizes the whoreishness of the DP, that the Denver Post with all their butt-hungry lawyers will come down and sue me for everything I'm worth.

...which ain't shit.

Let's stop linking to them and start looking for real reporting that isn't beholden to a master antithetical to truth in reporting.

Thank you and this concludes your butt-hungry public service announcement.

i'd rather it stay down
and your diary on their pettiness stay up.
if people want to read it - google the title, it will come up somewhere else as several people randomly copy my stuff and repost.

Did you receive a cease and desist letter?

The Post has cut its ties to Righthaven.
I haven't heard that Righthaven officially bankrupt but I think it's heading there.

I think it's fair enugh for the Denver Post to ask that bloggers use a limited
amount of content from a single story, and then provide a link. That's their policy. I think it's fine.

I'm wondering if your letter, like Pols' letter, if you got one, asked that you not use ANY content or if it asked that you limit your use of content to the policy that's been published in the newspaper since the time that Pols got its cease-and-desist letter.

No it wasn't like that, but my perspective stems from
the fact that we are discussing events that effect us. I appreciate the presence of photojournalists in the thick of the action, but telling me that I'll get shut down if I don't take down their documentation of one of the most public scenarios is annoying. I know they're a business but I don't give a shit about the health of their business, I give a shit about talking about current events.

On the Occupy Denver PR list we got a message from someone trying to sell their photos to the DP and whining about being undercut by photojournalist who is also an organizer with OD. She claimed that by giving away photos to the media, we're aggravating the very thing we're trying to fight. It's just such a ridiculous argument. I've already been around and around with people about this issue but I think it's just another shade of disaster capitalism, therefore concern about it is not on my radar.

Anyway, back to DP, they're selling us our own current events and threatening to shut down anyone who discusses it?? It's so very fucked up.

But it gives us something to talk about.
