Suthers Pwned in MMJ debate

by: Fong

Thu Apr 08, 2010 at 10:47:17 AM MST

Whether or not it could pass Constitutional muster is moot in the court of public opinion. The Teabaggers should pay attention when one of their own turns his back on the hyperbole the movement perpetuates about the Tenth Amendment.

The Denver Daily News has an article about a debate between Colorado Attorney General John Suthers and leading Medical Marijuana Attorney Rob Corry. At one point in the debate, Cory pwns Suthers by calling balderdash on Suthers' right-wing mantra of selective "states rights" when it fits his ideology.

Fong :: Suthers Pwned in MMJ debate
Corry contended that the federal government should "butt out" of Colorado's business and stop raiding medical marijuana growers or dispensaries. He likened the Drug Enforcement Agency busting members in Colorado's medical marijuana community to a cop waving someone through a red light and then giving them a ticket. A memo sent by President Barack Obama's administration urging federal authorities not to spend resources prosecuting legal users of marijuana should prevent the DEA from raiding medical marijuana growers and users, he said.

Corry blasted Suthers for suing the federal government over the health care reform act, yet not asking the federal government to respect state rights when it comes to medical marijuana. [emphasis mine]

I keep asking this question: why is this not obvious, Suthers? Amendment 20 fits all of the criteria of justly telling the Federal govt to stay out, but you're not doing that. It's a voter mandate from the people of the state of Colorado. Oh, and there is a market for it. What's the problem?

It looks like Suthers disapproves of people getting high (which, NEWSFLASH! relieves pain), and now he is turning his back on so many of the right-wing slogans because he doesn't believe in... wait for it... freedom of choice.

We know that whether we like it or not, the federal government in fact does have authority to regulate health care, including MMJ.

rhetorical doublestandard
shocker -- the republicans use a "small government, states' rights" slogan when it fits their interests, but then ignores it when it doesn't.  Kind of like when we had George W. "tax cut and spend" Bush in office -- the rhetoric didn't match the action.

It's interesting to see the few true libertarians that still float around the republican party -- they are all about legalization...because it's an individual right.
