Polar Bear Cubs Die More Often With Less Arctic Ice

by: WeatherDem

Tue Jul 19, 2011 at 15:14:26 PM MST

As Arctic ice thins and melts more and more every year, polar bear cub mortality is rising.  Compared to cubs that don't have to swim as far to reach sea ice, which had a 19% mortality rate, cubs that are being forced to swim for days without reaching ice had a 45% mortality rate in a recent study.

With less body fat, the cubs can't maintain their internal body heat as long as adults and they aren't as buoyant in the water.  The cubs either drown because they can't keep their noses above water or they succumb to the colder water.

I will point out that this is only one species.  There are many other species we didn't even know existed that are under similar pressures from our greenhouse pollution.  On top of that, there are yet more species whose fate are being sealed every day we don't reduce that pollution.

The Anthropocene is underway.  What happens in this Epoch is up to us.

But, But, The Texas State Meterologist Says, "No Global Warming"
"And, Texas needs rain"

And somehow
the two are completely separate issues.  Nope, no relation there...

Are we sure the Free Market can't fix this?
sorry, my cynicism is overtaking my optimism at an increasing rate.

It can! It can!
Make sure to drive a hybrid with inflated tires, change your lightbulbs, uh... reuse shopping bags, buy energy efficient appliances, water your lawn when it's dark, donate to the enviro group that is your favorite Hollywood star's favorite enviro group, and sign as many online petitions as you possibly can, go to as many enviro rallies that deliver those petitions to legislators who may or may not show up to the rally, spread the word! Then sigh a deep sigh of relief knowing you've done your part :) aaah...

I'm convinced the Free Market can fix everything
Not.

No cynicism detected here - just realism.  If others think reality isn't full of peaches and cream, well, that's not our fault, is it?

the current system of world economies based on money
first i.e. profits will soon be shown to be far too shortsighted to be compatible with human survival.
Emotional currency and empathy must become the new standard of a means of exchange.
Unfortunately, a lot of wealthy people will fight tooth and nail to hold on to this antiquated and unsustainable system and have been successful so far at keeping this system in place.

good and disturbing diary.

you said it.
America's corporate titans are drooling at the thought of wide open markets in India and China and elsewhere. When Indian and Chinese workers figure out they're getting the short end of the stick (as we are slowly) there's nothing that can stop the collective billions of humans who will be outraged by these thieves' behavior.

hope it happens soon.

Our sarcastic comments
are neither unique nor new. They are an indication that time is running/has run out. Taking public opinion with us and utilizing the same old, socially acceptable avenues for change are not viable anymore. I think the real measure to be taken now is when will the movement to fuck it all up, salvage then restore the natural world come to term, or does humanity just not have that much self-interest? There's no profit in an endeavor like that and the sacrifice is great, but there is no greater sacrifice than the earth so wtf have we got to lose?

one more thing of note, worth a diary itself
It was Rupert Murdoch that hacked and got the 'Climategate' Emails to discredit global warming.

Always maintained
it was the hacking that should have garnered attention: who perpetrated the crime?  Of course, Law-N-Order Republican Teabaggers wanted nothing to do with that.

As details in this widening case continue to come forward, I will be interested to see how complicit the American DOJ is in NewsCorp activities.
