Bennet, Johanns Lead Bipartisan Call for President to Support Comprehensive Deficit Reduction
32 Republicans, 32 Democrats Sign Letter

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet(D-Colo.) and Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today led a bipartisan call for President Obama to support a comprehensive deficit reduction package in any negotiations on the budget.

In a letter to the President, 64 Senators ask him to engage in budget negotiations beyond FY2011 that include discretionary spending cuts, entitlement changes and tax reform, to create meaningful deficit reduction. The letter notes that a bipartisan group of Senators has been working to craft a comprehensive deficit reduction package based upon the recommendations of the Fiscal Commission, and that the group's work represents an important foundation to achieve meaningful progress on our debt.

"By approaching these negotiations comprehensively, with a strong signal of support from you, we believe that we can achieve consensus on these important fiscal issues.  This would send a powerful message to Americans that Washington can work together to tackle this critical issue," the senators wrote.

They are pretending to want to "balance the budget" when what they are really doing is ramping up their war against the poor and middle class.  Where is there any mention here of the multi-trillion-dollar pricetags for our wars in the Middle East and other military expenditures? Where is there any mention of the deregulatory factors that caused the global financial meltdown, which led to the colossal bailout of Wall Street?  These are the same senators who recently doubled down on the budget deficit by extending tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires, but now they want us to believe that the reason why they're attacking essential public services is because they're "deficit hawks"?

This isn't about the budget, people. The budget is a pretext for expanding the oligarchy's class warfare against the poor and the middle class in America and around the world.

Full text of letter:

Dear President Obama:

As the Administration continues to work with Congressional leadership regarding our current budget situation, we write to inform you that we believe comprehensive deficit reduction measures are imperative and to ask you to support a broad approach to solving the problem.

As you know, a bipartisan group of Senators has been working to craft a comprehensive deficit reduction package based upon the recommendations of the Fiscal Commission.  While we may not agree with every aspect of the Commission's recommendations, we believe that its work represents an important foundation to achieve meaningful progress on our debt.  The Commission's work also underscored the scope and breadth of our nation's long-term fiscal challenges.

Beyond FY2011 funding decisions, we urge you to engage in a broader discussion about a comprehensive deficit reduction package.  Specifically, we hope that the discussion will include discretionary spending cuts, entitlement changes and tax reform.

By approaching these negotiations comprehensively, with a strong signal of support from you, we believe that we can achieve consensus on these important fiscal issues.  This would send a powerful message to Americans that Washington can work together to tackle this critical issue.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

In addition to Johanns and Bennet, the letter was signed by the following Senators:

Bennet is a Gutless Wonder
I wonder why he wanted the stupid job since he won't dare make a decision about any policies.

Is he gutless,
or is he simply carrying out the agenda his corporate masters installed him to do? I'm convinced that Bennet, Obama and the rest of the Corporate Dems are systematically feigning incompetence as a cover for their deliberate, premeditated complicity with the forces of plutocracy.  Could these Vichy Dems really be as impotent and cowardly as they would have us believe?

hey copols
I told you so...

[ Parent ]
What are you talking about?

[ Parent ]
Wade must have
had a bet with pols that Bennet would create bipartisan consensus on deficit. Nice win, Wade.

No Benefit Reduction Without Higher Tax Rates for High Earners and TWithdrawal form Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya
The subject says it all.

Thanks to Wade and Sarah
I had heard this about the incredibly low property taxes the wealthy and famous pay here in Colorado, but I had not heard of the "annointed one" having penned a new letter?

I DID know that he wanted to 'cut' Social Security, and that is why he constantly ignores all of the emails I have sent him, begging he and Udall, to become a co-sponsor of the Social Security Fairness Act.

I KNEW that his 'election' was a set up...only WE are the ones who have been SET UP!

How soon can Bennet be recalled?  And Udall?  We true Democrats need to stand up and start doing something about these corporate rats...they are destroying us each day they remain in office.

And please, Mr. Roark, we are far too intelligent to be spoken to in the harsh tone you have taken on this blog.

Thanks again, to Sarah Fong and Wade Norris for putting this information here for us to see.  Now my husband can read for himself what I was telling him about how hard it is for US to make our property tax payments every year...its especially difficult being retirees and me being a retired government employee...I get next to nothing in Social Security as it is...but I have been fighting to have the two bills affecting government employees here in Colorado and 14 other states, to have those bills repealed.

My idea to buy some sheep and put them in our covenant 'protected' community was not a bad idea after all...or maybe we can order a load of hay?  I figured our dog could herd the sheep, then we could sell their wool or I could buy a loom and make yarn to sell.  Is that good enough agriculture?

As an afterthought, what steps has Hickenlooper's budget  taken towards seniors and their property tax dedcution that was voted in, but is fair game for EVERY governor to put back to the full amount and place such a heavy burden on this state's senior citizens.  Shameful and absurd...but then again, didn't someone from Alaska speak of 'Death Panels' once?   I know this is not about health care...but you can be sure Bennet and Udall will be voting with the Republics on that one too!

Impeach!  Now!

.

You're welcome
and thanks for posting and getting mad about it.

Roark?
If you are going to boast to someone of your superior  intelligence, you should probably spell their name correctly when doing so. Especially when the spelling is IN their username.

[ Parent ]
A thank-you to amethystlady2
for her thoughtful comments.
