Attend an evening with Diane Ravitch, champion of public schools

by: DefenseDenver

Mon Jan 31, 2011 at 22:59:10 PM MST

(Thursday February 17, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM MST   - promoted by Fong)

Plan to attend An Evening With Diane Ravitch, moderated By Eli Stokols of Fox31 News.  You will not want to miss the chance to hear the author of  "The Death and Life of the Great American School System:  How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education."

In her latest book, distinguished education scholar and former proponent of the federal No Child Left Behind Act Diane Ravitch raises concerns over testing mania and school choice. In the process, she is reframing the national debate over the best ways to improve our nation's public schools.

From 1991 to 1993, she was Assistant Secretary of Education and Counselor to Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. She was responsible for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement in the U.S. Department of Education. As Assistant Secretary, she led the federal effort to promote the creation of voluntary state and national academic standards.

From 1997 to 2004, she was a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the federal testing program. She was appointed by the Clinton administration's Secretary of Education Richard Riley in 1997 and reappointed by him in 2001. From 1995 until 2005, she held the Brown Chair in Education Studies at the Brookings Institution and edited Brookings Papers on Education Policy. Before entering government service, she was Adjunct Professor of History and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Here's some footage of a talk she gave last fall in Los Angeles with the local teacher's union...

It would be nice
if members the hyper-critical mob would open their minds enough to attend this event and honestly listen, but I've been told my expectations of people are unreasonable.

If you buy my ticket
then I'll be there.

I saw that Progress Now was co-sponsoring the event. Can anyone explain to me what beef you have with them?

Answer the questions.
Who are ProgressNow's donors?
What is the whole truth of ProgressNow's connection to ColoradoPols?
Where can we see filings in which ProgressNow and ColoradoPols properly disclose their relationship?

I'll do my best
if you tell me what's wrong with Progress Now.

Fair's fair. I asked first.

There must be something wrong with ProgressNow and ColoradoPols.
They're being so secretive. They must have something to hide. Isn't that the way your logic goes?

Come on, answer the questions.

Hmmm....
First you say "crickets," meaning you won't answer the question, then you go on to, you know, ask me questions I couldn't possibly answer. You see, I'm not affiliated with either of them.

I'll go back to ignoring you. Remember: no response from me is how I tell you that you're wrong or ridiculous.

[ Parent ]
Why are you dodging the questions, Ari?

I used to work at ProgressNow
and as far as I can tell, a lot of people already know that Alan Franklin is Coloradopols. He's the web guy at ProgressNow. I also used to do the books at Soapblox and he pays the bill.

For a long time I thought there was a higher purpose ProgressNow/Coloradopols was serving and maybe for some people the mushy middle is an adequately comfy place but anymore the middle translates to the same old bullshit of Dems over-compromising and Republicans essentially always getting their way. Meanwhile enacted policies equate to the undeterred, ever accelerating destruction of life as we know it.

Anyhoo, when I worked there, all day long Huttner (Executive Director at ProgressNow) would come out of his office and tell Franklin what to put up on the blog. Their whole scheme is to control the message and hey, if they didn't do it, someone else would, right? <-- cop-out

Back then I was also a blogger on the old, John Erhardt-run squarestate. Like the site's motif, I was green to politics and I knew that ProgressNowAction is a well-funded org that could be a stepping stone in a bright political career. I would listen to Alan's criticisms and "purity" issues about squarestate and believe him. Alan would also say that there is a "place" for squarestate and that s2 makes things better. I believed this strange contradiction so I kept my secret to myself and the others I knew who knew, and there are a lot of them. Plus, back then, I valued the anonymity of the identity of Alan as Coloradopols as much as I did the average user. I don't anymore. I think Alan as Coloradopols has set himself up to be a very public figure who somehow escapes accountability. Sorry, Alan. It's nothing personal.

The thing about ProgressNow's philosophy about Colorado politics is that they feel Colorado is a purple state and to expect to win progressive causes beyond gay marriage, choice issues, and other civil rights issues is unreasonable, therefore, they don't really go for it. Maybe sometimes in their blast emails they'll remind people that progress is the first part of progressnow and actually mention something more substantial than Marilyn Musgrave, but they never really push the issue.

Alan and I had several conversations over cigarette breaks about how precariously purple he and the rest of the blueprint orgs feel the state is. He would also beg me not to tell John Erhardt or Aaron Silverstein about who he really is, at least not until after the 2008 election. So I kept the secret for a long time thinking ProgressNow does some good... I think..., but I don't see it anymore and I no longer think ProgressNow serves a purpose beyond a self-serving one. They're certainly not progressive and given their resources, they certainly aren't getting Colorado anywhere.

But part of me is surprised that not everyone knows this. And I know a lot of people are going to accuse me of having a "scorch the earth" rant but seriously, you guys didn't already know this?

So to bring this thing back full-circle, the shrills about DeFENSE not being required to keep records ring hollow when those shrills come from the unquestioning mouths hungry for more of Coloradopols' propaganda. You can't tell others to clean up when you yourself are covered in your own shit.

Well, I guess you could, it would just be very unbecoming.

Thanks, Fong.
This truth needed to be brought out into the sunlight.

I forgot that you worked there.
Now it makes sense.

I learned about Alan's moonlighting job when I was hanging out with a bunch of Democratic operatives who work at the Capitol. It was no big thing to them so for, what, the third time this week, I bring you

Do or do not, there is no try.

It's interesting
that Alan also posts at Pols under his (semi-) real identity:
http://coloradopols.com/user/Alan

So technically, which is the sockpuppet -- "ColoradoPols" or "Alan"? It's got to be one or the other, and it's a blatant violation of Pols' own supposed rules.

Thank you very much.
That's some food for thought there.

[ Parent ]
Really?
I totally didn't expect that reaction. You're welcome and thank you.

[ Parent ]
Maybe Alan can bum a ride
on Mubarak's impending helicopter trip. ... What's Arabic for "Going my way?"
